February 17, 1966 Basketball - The Collins girls won a fast moving game over Mingo on the home court, 82-63. The guard court continued their fine play. Our guards, Linda Clemons, Mickey Holland, Cathy Clemons played their usual fine game, especially intercepting several passes. Girls Sectional Basketball Tournament: First round - The Collins Clipperettes rolled into the semi-final round of the sectional tournament, defeating a hard-fighting Monroe team 74-65. The Clipperettes came back from a 2-point halftime deficit to put the game on ice midway through the 4th quarter, building a 68-55 lead with 3 minutes to go. The guard court solved the Monroe attack in the 2nd half, permitting the Clipperettes to build their lead. Scoring: Vicki Mullihan - 33 pts.; Sandy Rumbaugh - 32 pts.; Pam Snyder - 9 pts. Semi-final round - The Clipperettes used a stout defense and some timely shooting for their 15th win of the season in defeating Maxwell 63-51. The Collins guard court consistently broke up the Maxwell offense and controlled the boards. Collins had 26-19 halftime lead and moved on to the 63-51 victory. Finals - Collins Clipperettes lost a hard-fought sectional final to Nevada 55-53 at Bondurant. Nevada had fast start and quickly moved to a 12 point lead and 15-10 1st quarter lead. The 2nd quarter the teams played on even terms with Collins still trailing 6 points at halftime. Collins girls tied the game at 37-37 at the 3rd quarter mark. The teams traded baskets and lead several times in the 4th quarter. Collins gained a 51-50 lead into the final two minutes. Nevada scored 3 points and a basket by Rumbaugh tied the game at 53-53, and then Nevada connected on two free throws for 55-53 lead. The Clipperettes missed a free throw and Nevada held the ball until Cathy Clemons intercepted a pass, fired the ball into front court for a last second desperation missed shot. The girls received a trophy for second place and will advance to the District Tournament, opposing Norwalk.
February 24, 1966 The Annual Hi-Lites Show presented by the students of Collins is scheduled for March 11. All those connected with the Music Department are rushing about getting ready for try-outs, which began Feb. 1. The show will be nearly two hours long, allowing time for more acts and much variety.
