First Grade: We are decorating our room for Christmas. We are beginning Spelling. When we spell a word we don't know, it helps us to sound it out. More and more library books are being checked out and often we take them home. It is fun to read a book with very little help. (Reporter not shown)
Temperance Speech by Dr. King: On November 12, Dr. Albert King from Cornell College spoke to Collins students on alcoholism. Some of the things he told us were the effects of alcohol which will kill a person (which happens at 6% in the blood) and the body protectors for preventing a person from drinking themselves to death. This seldom occurs, but has happened. He also told us the steps in which alcoholism affects a person. He explained his purpose was not to say whether you should drink or not, but to point out the facts and let individuals decide for themselves. (Reported by Bonnie Downing.)
Homecoming Queen and Attendants Honored at Ames: On November 16 Mary Ann Evans (queen), Karen Kingman, Karla Rhoads, Sherry Granger (attendants) accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Hinders, went to Ames for a day honoring homecoming queens and their attendants of Story County. We arrived in Ames around 9:00 a.m. at the Ames Band Shell where the bands, queens, attendants and cars for the parade were getting organized. Shortly after 9:00 a.m. four very happy girls were riding down the Main Street of Ames in a brand new Oldsmobile convertible. None of us could actually believe it was true! After the parade we were taken to different stores to greet people. At 11:30 we were guests of the merchants at Friley Hall for a delicious ham dinner. Each of us was introduced. After dinner we attended the Kansas vs. Iowa State football game as guests of the Ames merchants. The cheerleading clinic was also being held in Ames the same day. Luckily we got to sit next to Maxine, Barb, and Sheila. At the beginning of the football game some 600 cheerleaders from all over the state of Iowa were on the field and led a cheer for Iowa State. It seemed as though the field was a rainbow of color in just seconds. I must add that our cheerleaders did a fine job of representing Collins. It gave us a feeling of part of what college is like. Mr. and Mrs. Hinders returned us to Collins around 4:00 p.m. I am sure I speak for all the girls when I say this will be a day that will stand out in our memories of high school days. I know all of us wish to thank all of the Collins students for letting us have the privilege of representing Collins. We also wish to thank Mr. and Mrs. Hinders. We hope many of you will get to experience the privilege of representing Collins at this annual event in the future. Thank you again, C. H. S. (Reported by Sherry Granger).
Boys Sports: In all of our games this year our team seems to be unable to find the basket often enough as we are hitting only 25% of our shots. We have also made 140 costly mistakes. I am sure we will improve greatly by the time the year is over.
