Speech members attended an all-day clinic at the State University of Iowa on November 2. Four freshmen were contestants at the special clinic. Bill Hamilton, Marilyn Carson, Kay Robinson and Vicki Mullihan presented readings in three different rooms with different judges, supposedly improving each time. Mr. Maxwell drove the bus, leaving at 6:45 a.m. for the trip to Iowa City. Marilyn was the first to give her reading. The rest of us were "observers" who attended to learn as much as we could. After each group of readings the results were posted. Those who did participate gained experience and helpful criticism. To me the campus of the State University of Iowa seemed familiar and friendly although I had never been there before. We arrived back in Collins near 8:30 p.m. The speech class plans to attend the District High School Speech Contest February 21-22. I think everyone who went thought it was worthwhile. (Reported by Sheila Johnson)

Freshman News: Since everyone has seen their report card, some have decided that it wouldn't hurt to work a little bit harder. Home Ec. class - The girls gave a tea for their mothers and a few faculty members. The girls had to make their own pies. We have finished Literature and are now studying English. Seventh grade Arithmetic - studying percentages. We have completed study of county, state, and federal government in Civics. English studying parts of speech. Health - studying the nervous system. The Student Council took up a collection for the Red Cross on Nov. 18. The student council was also busy with the clothing collection they had on Dec. 2nd to Dec. 6th. We are also starting to have meetings about our basketball homecoming scheduled for Jan. 17 after our game with Baxter. There will be a dance after the game. There are four girls selected from the senior class to be queen candidates for homecoming. The queen will be elected by the student body. Our student council has made some rules and regulations. These rules were given to each student and have been posted at several places in the school. They are expected to be followed by everyone. We hope all students will cooperate with the student council. We are doing our best. (Reported by Mary Ann Evans, Secretary)

Sixth Grade: Spanish - we have learned the articles of clothing, the parts of the body and are now learning the furniture of the house. For our Christmas party, we have decided to have a grab bag. The boys planned the Thanksgiving party so the girls are in charge of the Christmas party. Social Studies - we have finished studying the country of Greece. (Reported by Marvin Huntrods)

Fifth Grade: While Mrs. Lyle (Marjorie) Heintz is hospitalized and recovering from surgery, Mrs. Berle Robinson has been our teacher. At the time of the recent national tragedy, we were studying our nations' capital in Social Studies. So many buildings and landmarks in Washington, D. C. have been in the news and on T.V.; we shall always remember the historical events that we have talked about in 5th grade.

We practiced writing correct social letters in English class and each of us wrote a personal letter to Mrs. Heintz. Our Health chapter has been about "growing up." Now we know we must exercise self-control and grown-up behavior. Since Thanksgiving Day we are trying to remember to say `Thank You" every day and to use good manners. Please plan to see us in the Christmas Program December 18. We practice our program songs during music class. (Reporter not shown)
