April 27, 1961 At the State Music Contest held in Laurel, the Collins musicians earned five II ratings and four III ratings. The girls trio, trombone solo by Dick Rice, soprano solos by Charlene Laughlin and Esther Swaim, high soprano solo by Cheryle Partridge earned II ratings. A coronet solo by Verlyn Noring, the trumpet trio, brass quartet, and girls sextet earned III ratings. At Martinsdale contest, the band earned a II rating.
Baseball - Collins beats Roland 5-2. A very rare event occurred as Collins, although out-hit 5-4, defeated Roland 5-2 in a conference game on the Collins diamond. Collins scored one run in the 1st inning and Roland responded with a run in the 2nd inning. Terry Huntrods singled to begin the 3rd inning, Clyde Dalby reached 1st base on a fielder's choice and a double by Jim Crabb drove in both runners. Crabb came home on a Roland error and a passed ball. Collins added a run in the 4th inning and Roland scored 1 in the 5th for the final 5-2 Collins victory. Mort Dodd scored 2 runs, but was not credited with a hit as he reached base on an error and a fielder's choice. Jim Crabb had 2 for 3 in batting.
