Baseball - With temperatures hovering around 40 degrees the Clippers' Galen Smith pitched a no-hitter (five innings) against the home team, Melbourne, for a 4-0 win in the first game of the season. The Clippers' break came in the 3rd inning when Clyde Dalby walked, Dick Rice connected for a triple and then scored on an error. Collins scored two more runs in the 4th inning with Dodd and Dalby receiving walks and Dick Rice hitting a double to drive in both runs. April 9, 1961 Collins scored in the 10th inning for a 4-3 victory over Clemons. Collins had their first hit in the 7th inning and all their runs were unearned. With the score tied at 3 apiece in the 10th inning, Dalby singled, stole 2nd, and a single by Dick Rice scored Dalby with the winning run. April 11, 1961 Several seniors and juniors were in Iowa Falls Thursday evening attending Open House at Ellsworth College. They enjoyed a stage play "See Them Run" and a dance. A tour of the college was also on the agenda.
Baseball - The Clippers fell before NESCO in their conference opening game 7-2. NESCO had tremendous 1st inning, scoring 6 runs. Collins came back with 2 in the bottom of the 1st, but was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities for the 7-2 loss. April 13, 1961 A busload of students went to the Hawkeye Science Fair at Des Moines Friday evening. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Jackson, Mrs. Behrens, and Robert Graves.
April 15, 1961 The junior class mothers met in the Home Ec room Monday afternoon to make plans for the Junior-Senior Banquet. The banquet will be May 6 in the school lunchroom followed by the prom with the high school invited. On May 5 the Senior Class play will be presented in the high school auditorium/gym.
April 18, 1961 Baseball - The Collins Clippers were on the short end of 9-1 score in conference game against Gilbert. Collins scored first on a single by Clyde Dalby, went to 2nd on an error and scored when the catcher overthrew 3rd base as Dalby was stealing 3rd. Gilbert came back in the bottom of the 2nd inning with 3 runs on 2 hits and a walk and added 6 more runs in the 3rd inning for the 9-1 win in the 5-inning game.
