July 11, 1960 Summer Sectional Baseball Tournament at Radcliffe: First round - Collins vs. Ames (Little Cyclones). Collins' season record not found; Ames' season record 11 wins, 1 defeat (Marshalltown) winning the Central Iowa Conference (C. I. C.) with teams of East Waterloo, West Waterloo, Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, and Newton. Ames also had All-State pitcher (left-hander). Gary Borts' hit drove in Collins run in the 1st inning and Ames also scored 1 run in the 1st. Danny Long powered a home run over the scoreboard for Collins' 2nd run in the 3rd inning. Ames came back to score 1 run for 2-2 score. Gary Borts' 2nd hit drove in Collins' 3rd run in the 6th for 3-2 lead. Ames, a late inning team during the season, scored 1 run in the 7th inning for 3-3 tie game and into extra innings. No scores in the 8th. Rain, threatening throughout the game, began pouring down in the 9th and 10th innings as neither team could score. Umpires delayed game for 40 minutes and with the rain continuing, the game was "called." High School baseball rules do not allow tied games in tournament play. The game must be replayed and was rescheduled to the following night in Radcliffe at 6:00 p.m. Danny Long, starting pitcher: innings - 7, and Gary Borts, relief pitcher: innings - 3. Catcher - Jim Nichol.

July 13, 1960 Replaying July 11, 1960 Sectional Tournament First Round Game of 10 innings called because of rain with 3-3 tie score. (Apparently game delayed an extra day) Collins lost to Ames (near 100 times larger than Collins) by only one run 3-2 in another extra in inning game - 9 innings. These games totaling 19 innings (10 and 9) to decide the first round game sectional tournament winner are likely a part of Iowa Baseball record-making history. Collins scored 1 run in the 1st inning on a walk to Galen Smith, stole 2nd base, and scoring on Jim Nichol's base hit. Ames scored a run in the top of the 5th and 6th innings. Collins came back in the bottom of the 6th inning as Danny Long received a walk, stole 2nd base, moving to 3rd on an Ames fielding error, and scoring on Jim Nichol's 2nd run scoring hit of the game, for a 2-2 tie game. Collins was within inches of winning the game in the 7th inning when Galen Smith singled with 2 out and Mort Dodd on 2nd base was thrown out in a close play at home plate. There were no scores until the top of the 9th when Ames scored 1 unearned run with 2 outs for the 3-2 victory. Collins made a strong comeback effort in the bottom half, loading the bases against an All-State pitcher, but was unable to score. Gary Borts, starting pitcher: Innings - 5. Danny Long, relief pitcher: Innings - 4. Combined hits - 5. Catcher - Jim Nichol. Collins' team collected 4 hits. Lineup for each game of 10 and 9 innings: Gary Borts (60) (ss-p) (p-ss); Galen Smith (62) (2b-ss); Danny Long (60) (p-2b) (2b-p); Jim Nichol (61) (c); Jim Crabb (61) (1b); George Ballard (62) (3b); Walt Nichol (61) (rf); John Tiffany (60) (lf); Mort Dodd (62) (cf).
