Cheerleaders: Sherry Luing, Rita Branscomb, Nancy Kloppenborg, Sharon Campbell; Coach Richard (Dick) Cory (Collins School Graduate) presented Letters and Chevrons to the participants and managers in the Boys Athletics (names not found) and Letters and Chevrons to the participants and managers in the Girls Athletics (names not found); Music instructor Paul Skinner presented awards to the music students participating in band, marching band, and the various vocal groups (names not found).
The Eighth Grade presented their portion of the program, which was emceed by John Fitzgerald. James C. Scott presented diplomas: Pat Kingman, John Fitzgerald, Jerry Crabb, Carol Bowers, Mary Ann Evans, Mary Dassenko, Alan Hanson, Verlyn Noring, Marilyn Synder, Sandra Christian, Maxine Hunt, Robert Chittenden. Basketball letters were awarded to seven girls and six boys of the seventh and eighth grade students.
(Insert 2007: Summer High School Baseball - The Iowa High Schools began summer baseball program in summer of 1959 or 1960. Graduated seniors were eligible to play in the summer of their graduating year. The spring and fall baseball programs continued as in prior years. A recent newspaper article stated the fall baseball program and tournaments ended with the 1985 season and spring baseball was terminated few years later. Both season programs were replaced by single-season summer baseball program. Schools were also separated into three or four classes based on school enrollment numbers.)
1960 was Collins' first year participation in the summer baseball program. Coach was Richard (Dick) Cory (Collins School Graduate). The conference teams were: Collins, Milford Twp, Maxwell, Roland, Story City, North Polk (merger of Polk City, Alleman, and Elkart), and Ballard School (merger of Cambridge, Huxley, Slater, Sheldahl, and Kelley schools). Also non-conference games with Clemons and four games with Des Moines Junior Legion teams played at the Grandview College diamond in Des Moines. Coach Cory said they lost 4 games to the Legion teams, but the high quality competition helped develop the quality of play by the Collins team. The season schedule was 16-18 games.
June - Baseball - Collins' won over Ballard 9-2 in their first Summer High School game yesterday on the Collins diamond. Collins scored their runs in the 1st, 5th, and 6th innings with the aid of four Ballard errors. Danny Long had a single, two doubles, and Jim Crabb hit a triple. June 12, 1960 Baseball - Collins sneaked by Nevada 1-0 yesterday. The game turned into a pitchers duel as Gary Borts - Collins - pitched a no-hitter. Collins collected only four hits, scoring their lone run in the 4th inning. Jim Crabb singled, Ballard walked, Crabb advanced to 3rd on a passed ball, and scored on an infield out for the 1-0 victory margin. Collins had the bases loaded in the 2nd and 5th innings, but were unable to score. Gary Borts pitched: Innings - 7, hits - 0, runs - 0, strikeouts - (?), walks - (?).
