December 17, 1959 Collins seniors attended the fifth annual Court Day held at the Story County Courthouse in Nevada. District Court Judge Ed J. Kelley, who acted as judge during the mock trial, told us he hoped we would get a better understanding of the work of our judicial system. At 10:00 a.m. R. J. Pasley, president of the Story County Bar Association, addressed the group, telling a little about the case and introduce us to the lawyers who would be taking the parts in the mock trial. The jury was then selected from the students representing different schools. After jury selection, the attorneys gave their opening statements. The case was a criminal one. The defendant was charged with operating a motor vehicle upon the highways while intoxicated.
