Grade News: Kindergarten - We have started working in our Arithmetic primers on the numbers 1 and 2. We practice printing both the figure and the word of these two numbers. 3rd - We had a lesson on telling time so those new Christmas watches could be used. 5th - "Rin Tin Tin's Rinty" is the book the class finished listening to on Friday.
January 22, 1959 Basketball - A double overtime, the second a quick death, found Milford Twp girls on top 37-35 after a hard-fought game at Milford Twp. We outscored them from the field, free throws put them ahead, as we missed 16 of 23 attempts. While Collins was getting off to a slow start, Milford Twp was making a very high percentage of their shots and led at the first quarter mark 21-7. Halftime score was 33-23, favoring Milford Twp. The Collins boys defeated Mitchellville in a very exciting game 53-52. The score sea-sawed back and forth the entire game. Halftime score was 26-27, Collins trailing. Third quarter was 39-39. Junior High - After winning from Shipley 20-10 last week and Zearing 28 - 11 this week, the girls record is 4-0. The boys won over Shipley 27-26, but lost to Zearing 36-26, making their record 2-2. Our next junior game is Monday evening at Milford Twp. Leading scorers for the girls were Sally Coughenour - 15; Jane Dodd - 9; Patsy Kingman - 4; leading scorers for the boys were Vernon Hickle - 12; Max Wolf - 9; Gary Hickle - 3.
January 29, 1959 The Supt. of schools, E. E. Jackson, opened the reorganization school meeting last Friday night by going over facts and figures. John Crabb, Pres. of the school board opened a general discussion to find out how the public felt about reorganizing. There was a good response in this discussion period with questions answered as best they could with what facts were available. Crabb suggested a future meeting date of Feb. 24, which was approved by the audience as the next meeting date. A committee was selected by the school board to visit reorganized schools and gather all information possible for report to help decide whether or not to reorganize and with whom.
Basketball - County Tournaments: Collins girls had a bye in the first round. Story City defeated Maxwell 49-13 in first round game and was Collins' opponent in the second round. Story City defeated Collins in this second round 57-42. Story City won the consolation game for third place in the county tournament.
