Mingo had only a five point halftime lead, the third quarter changed and Mingo pulled ahead to the 47-22 victory. The Collins boys pulled through their sixth win of the season by narrowly defeating Mingo 38-36. Mingo had halftime lead of 20-16 and held the lead until late in the 4th quarter when the Collins boys pulled ahead to win the game. January 15, 1959 The Collins Honorary Society has become an official member of the National Honor Society, receiving its charter in Dec. 1958. Each of the 14 members has a membership card and pin. The constitution stipulates the member must maintain an average of 92% or better for two consecutive six-week periods in order to be eligible for membership. Recommendation from the faculty is also necessary. Sophomores may become probate members; juniors and seniors charter members and graduates become graduate members. Freshmen are ineligible. The organization is designed to promote and maintain scholarship and rounded development of the individual.
All persons interested in school reorganization are urged to attend a special meeting to be held in the Collins high school gym on January 23, at 7:30 p.m.
Basketball - The Girls County Tournament will begin Monday at the Nevada field house. The Boys County Tournament begins the following week.
A good Zearing team handed the girls a 60-28 defeat, which was our second loss of the season to them. The guard court had their troubles as Claretta Smith, Betty Jane Kearns, and Celayne Elliott left the game with six fouls. Collins boys brought their record up to seven wins and six losses by defeating Zearing 53-33. As Zearing beat us four points in the prior game, this could be classified as one of the better games of the season. Three players scored in double figures. During Christmas vacation, the girls team played a scrimmage game with the alumni and found they haven't lost their touch as they beat us 70-56. Georgiann Briles, Jill Kilgore, Pam Miller, Janice Heintz, Saundra Smith, and Donna Frerichs made up the alumni team. Briles scored 38, Kilgore 28, and Miller 4 points for the alumni. Barbara Hickle led the high school with 16 and Susie Kilgore had 14.
Music News - The high school vocal department is starting a theory class to be held one day each week. The senior band is working on contest music; overtures, marches, and a variety of music. The junior band will start a new book at the end of this month. Solo and ensemble music students have begun practice for the contest to be held on April 17. The grade school contest will be held March 7. The fourth and fifth grades will begin flutophone work in February. They will also present a program for the regular P.T.O. meeting in February. Solo and ensemble groups presented entertainment for the County Teachers meeting held January 14. Several selected students will attend a music clinic to be held February 7 in Des Moines. Buddy DeFranco, better known as Mr. Clarinet, will be the director.
