August 26, 1897 A subscription is being circulated to raise money for the purchase of a set of encyclopedias for the high school room.
September 9, 1897 School opened: New principal – Herbert Pease, received education (graduated 1894) at Collins School. Herbert Pease, high school – 34 students; Mrs. Saunders, intermediate room – 36 students; Miss Hunt – primary room – 41 students.
Principal Pease started out with a desire to have an equipment of books, absolutely necessary to give the best information possible. By the kindness of subscriptions, he raised money to purchase a set of 15 volumes of the International Encyclopedias, the latest edition, a price of which is $45. These handsome volumes are now in evidence and are being found to be of eminent service.
December 23, 1897 The school board at its meeting Tuesday evening decided to employ a 4th teacher for the remainder of the winter. Prof. Pease’s room will be divided. The north room will be furnished with the old seats for the time being, thus incurring no other expense than the teacher’s salary. This move of the board is to be commended.
January 6, 1898 The high school includes grades 9 and 10, the later being the new grade just added.
January 13, 1898 The high school has been divided and a part of the pupils will occupy the third or grammar room. This leaves a few vacant seats for any who wish to attend.
April 14, 1898 At the meeting of the high school literary society, it was decided to buy a flag sized 12 feet by 6 feet, price $6.00. It was also decided to buy a dictionary for the grammar room, providing the school board agrees to return the money by the beginning of next year.
April 21, 1898 A new flag proudly floats over the school building. It is a beauty.
August 18, 1898 The school board has decided to repaint the schoolhouse, repair the roof, put in new seats, and make other improvements before the fall term begins.
September 1, 1898 School begins next Monday. Tuition will be .30 per week, payable to the principal each month in advance, Herbert Pease.
October 6, 1898 The board at its next meeting will be asked to grant a two-week vacation the later part of this month in order that the older boys have time to pick corn without interfering with their studies. The new seats arrived last Saturday and were placed in position in the schoolrooms most needing them.
October 27, 1898 On Monday evening at their meeting the school board decided to have a vacation next week. They also advanced Principal Pease $30 for the purpose of additional books for the school library, said sum to be returned to the district before the end of the school year.
