September 18, 1958 The P.T.O., local churches, and other organizations will have a joint reception for the teachers September 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the lunchroom. An interesting program is being arranged.
Baseball - Nineteen boys have signed up for baseball season. Probable lineup will be: Pitcher - Denny Sullivan; Catcher - Jim Nichol; First base - Danny Long; Second base - Galen Smith; Shortstop - Gary Borts; Third base - Jerry Dodd; Left field - Bob Dodd; Center field - Dave Derby; Right field - Norman Spooner. Other team members: Ronnie Etnier, John Tiffany, Max Anderson, Walt Nichol, George Ballard, Terry Huntrods, Dennis Downing, Stanley Granger, Jim Crabb, and Ben Carver.
Collins was defeated by Huxley (Ballard) 5-1 in the first round of the sectional tournament. Norman Spooner pitched for Collins. David Derby had Collins' only hit of the game. Huxley went on to win the tournament championship, defeating Clemons, 8-5, and Zearing 8-5.
M.A.K. Facts - First, in behalf of the senior class, I would like to thank all of the businesses in Collins and neighboring towns who bought ads from us for our annual. The seniors have made application for scholarship and placement tests for those who wish to attend any Iowa college. Three weeks of our senior year gone, and we are already getting ready for college tests.
Music News - Solo and ensemble tryouts were held Sept. 10. Those selected for these special groups will be available as special entertainment for club groups. If you are interested, please contact Miss Corpian at the high school. The high school music department has been invited to the Musical Jamboree at Zearing on Oct. 27. The public is invited to attend.
September 25, 1958 Parent-Teachers Organization reception was very well attended. Pres. Margaret Struthers presided at the business meeting. The program - Introduction of Teachers by Supt. Jackson. Favors were presented to each teacher by Judy Stevens and Linda Carson. Introduction of Outstanding Citizens of the Community: James Hale- eldest businessman; Walter Jeffers - 85-year-old town marshal; Mrs. Gertrude Richardson - charter librarian. Each was presented a souvenir gift of recognition; Piano solo - by Verlyn Noring; Duet - Marilyn Carson and Kay Robinson; Quartet Special - Pat Caulkins, Betty Lehman, Helen Lawson, Dorothy Holland, accompanied by Karol Atwood. Initiation of seven new faculty members. Lunch was sandwiches, pie, and coffee.
Baseball - Collins defeated Shipley on their diamond 12-2. Denny Sullivan was pitcher, allowing only three hits. Collins scored 12 run on four hits. Gary Borts had one hit, but scored four times.
