This past weekend Gary Hanson, Elliott Partridge, Glen Novinger, and Mary Ann Kearns attended a High School Civil Liberties Conference in Green Lake, Wisconsin. Attending the conference were high school youths from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Indiana. Especially interesting were the many foreign exchange students sponsored by the "American Friends Service Committee." Our group from the Des Moines area left on a chartered bus shortly after 7:00 a.m. on Friday and arrived in Green Lake in the midst of a snowstorm. Everyone was assigned to rooms and discussion groups. Elliott roomed with some of the foreign students. Immediately after supper, the first general session of the 400 students and counselors was held. The conference director opened with the topic of "The Friends Interests in Civil Liberties." Saturday morning after a silent worship and breakfast, the second session was held. Jackie Robinson (Insert 2006: The first Black major league baseball player and played his entire career with the Brooklyn Dodgers [team later moved to Los Angeles and became the Los Angeles Dodgers]) and Homer Jack, pastor of Unitarian Church, told of where we stand on the question of freedom for all Americans and what we are doing about it. We then broke into groups of approximately 20 for discussions on civil liberties. At the last session at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, representatives from seven geographic areas presented their views on civil liberties. We returned to Des Moines by chartered bus.

If it stands on edge, study.
