Baseball - Collins nipped Clemons in a close 6-5 win. Clemons scored first, one run in the top of the fourth, but Collins came back in their half and tallied five times. Clemons scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the score 5-5 going into the seventh inning. Frerichs' clutch hit scored Duesbury from second, as Duesbury narrowly avoided catcher's tag, and hollered, "He missed me. He didn't touch me." Ralph (Rusty) Vasey, umpire, gave the "safe" signal for the game winning run. Duesbury pitched 7 innings: runs - 5, hits - 9, strikeouts - 8, walks - 2. Team fielding errors - 1. Holland caught. Leading hitters: Holland - triple and Frerichs - double. Semifinals - Collins hung on to edge Maxwell in the final inning 9-8. The Clippers jumped to a 7-1 lead at the end of the fourth inning, but Maxwell kept chopping away that included four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 8 each. In the bottom of the 7th Kilker got a single, stole second, and scored on a wild throw to first base. Holland pitched 7 innings: runs - 8, hits - 3, strikeouts - 16, walks - 5. Team fielding errors- 3. Duesbury collected a double for Collins.
Finals - Collinscame from behind in the third inning and went on to beat Huxley 8-6 for the Championship of the South Story County Conference Baseball Tournament. Phil Holland homered over the 8-foot high board fence near 320 feet distance in the first inning with Long on base to take a 2-1 lead. The score was tied 6-6 when Collins scored their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 8-6 win. Other Collins extra base hits were doubles by Kilgore, Duesbury and Holland. Sectional Baseball Tournament at Collins. Collins advanced to the finals by continuing their winning streak with no season defeats, squeaking by Cambridge 7-6. Cambridge scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6. Carroll Smith scored the winning run on a single by Duesbury's first hit of the game. Holland hit his second homer (no fence, must hit ball so far outfielders are unable to return ball to home plate before runner has circled the bases) of the season in the fifth inning.
