Story County Boys' Basketball Tournament at the Nevada school field house.
First round - The boys advanced to the second round by slipping by Gilbert 38-35. It was a game of revenge for the Clippers, avenging a 65-35 loss earlier in the season. The first quarter score was 7-7 deadlock with Collins trailing at halftime 18-15. The Gilbert "zone press" defense caused Collins to make numerous turnovers in the first half. The boys reduced turnovers and improved shooting from 20% to 40% in the second half to take a four-point third quarter lead and hold on for a three-point victory of 38-35. Collins was outscored from the field, but scored ten points from the free throw line (Frerichs made six) to Gilbert's five was a critical factor in the upset 38-35 win. Lineup: Jack Kilgore (55) (f) 2 pts; Erwin Frerichs (52) (f) 13 pts.; Phil Holland (52) (c) 19 pts.; John Duesbury (52) (g) 4 pts.; Norman Baker (54) (g) 0 pts.; Larry Heintz (52) (c) 1 pt.; Carroll Smith (53) (g) 0 pts.
Second round - Collins' second upset advanced them to semifinals by dumping Fernald 60-46. Collins was on the short end of a 19-16 high scoring first quarter. Halftime score was 31-31. Fernald took the lead in the third quarter 44-40. Fernald's expectation that Collins team would tire with Fernald's race-horse fast break style game did not happen. Beginning the fourth quarter the Clippers scored 17 points before Fernald could score again, outscoring Fernald 20-2 in the last quarter. Holland and Frerichs each scoring 9 points and a strong team defense caused Fernald's fast break offense to be "out of sync." Collins shot 41% to Fernald's 30%. Also, Collins fouled only eight times (Duesbury - five) and Fernald had twenty fouls. Collins made ten free throws to only four by Fernald. Everyone played an excellent game, Kilgore, freshman, looked good on defense and rebounding. Lineup: Jack Kilgore (55) (f) 3 pts; Erwin Frerichs (52) (f) 21 pts.; Phil Holland (52) (c) 32 pts.; John Duesbury (52) (g) 2 pts.; Norman Baker (54) (g) 2 pts.; Larry Heintz (52) (c) 0 pts.
