May 3, 1951 Grade News: First - For Science we are studying the birds common to Iowa. The boys' project was making a birdhouse and painting it. The girls made bird posters and room decorations.
Baseball - South Story County Conference Baseball Tournament at Collins: First round - Collins vs. Bye. Semifinals - Collins over Colo 7-0. Don Johnson pitched with Phil Holland catching.
Finals - Collins won the Conference Championship by eking out a win over Maxwell 2-1. Collins scored one run in the 3rd inning and the game winning run in the 7th after two outs. A walk, a stolen base, and a single by Duesbury scored the runner from second base. The game was a pitchers' duel between Phil Holland for the home team and Maxwell pitcher, each allowing two hits. Holland struck out 13 Maxwell batters and only 2 Collins players struck out. (Insert 2005: No box scores on above two games.)
Last Friday the Senior Class enjoyed their annual skip day. The class, accompanied by Supt. Jackson, journeyed to Des Moines for a picnic dinner at Greenwood Park. Visits were to the new art center, State Capitol building, with most of the students climbing to the dome. Other activities were swimming at the Y, shopping, attending movies, and roller-skating.
May 10, 1951 Last Friday night the junior and senior classes and faculty enjoyed a lovely Junior-Senior Banquet at the Commodore Hotel in Des Moines. The theme was "Hitch Your Wagon to a Star." The "T" shaped table setting was decorated with tiny wagons made by Reno Milligan and John Carver, which carried one large red rose in each corner. After the banquet dinner, the program was: "Wishing on a Star" by Larry Heintz - Toastmaster; "Holiday in Stardom" by Barbara Kimberley; "Hitch Your Wagon to a Star" by Supt. Jackson; "Shooting Stars" by Phil Holland; "The Milky Way" by Prin. Lawson.
Freshmen News: In Algebra, we are studying literal equations containing fractions. In literal equations some of the known quantities are represented by letters. In General Science, we are on a new topic, food for the human engine. The way to prevent several diseases is to eat the proper foods. In English, we are learning the correct way to write friendly letters and business letters.
