April 5, 1951 The basketball boys went to Iowa City to watch the quarter final round of the state basketball tournament in the University of Iowa field house (before Carver arena/field house). There were two afternoon games, Keokuk 61 (Bill Logan, outstanding center), Grinnell 38 and Davenport 47, Sioux Center 35. The first evening game was Roland 43, (Class B School), West Waterloo 40, (AA sized school). East Des Moines 50, Forest City 44. Roland "Rockets" (Gary Thompson era 1950-53) defeated East Des Moines in the semi-final round 55-46 in another upset victory of a small school over a large school. In the final round, Davenport, largest school in the state, defeated Roland 50-40.
School music groups contributed several numbers to the P. T. A. Program last Tuesday evening. The music groups: Third grade; Tonettes - Lois Strutters, John Tiffany, Danny Long; Saundra Smith; Chorus of Gary Borts, Sharon Bowers, Patty Kimberley, Shirley Kern; Tonettes Duet - Saundra Smith, Lois Strutters, Danny Long, John Tiffany; Piano Solo - Claretta Smith; Tonettes Duet - Georgiann Briles, Sharon Stratton, Janet Blickensderfer, David Derby; Vocal Solo - Shirley Smith accompanied by Norma Keagle on piano, George Keagle on Symbols, and Elliott Partridge on Base Drums; Woodwind Trio - Sandra Long, Shirley Smith, Dale Derby; High School Band; Trio - Dale Derby, Larry Smith, Gary Luing.
April 12, 1951 Senior Class Play "Miss Jimmy," a three-act farce has been selected as the senior class play. The play is full of amusing situations and wisecracks. It tells the story of a college boy who enters the dormitory of an exclusive girls' school in search of a dress. The cast: Bonnie Long - Louise; Lola Oswalt - Florence; Phyllis Baker - Catherine; Norma Keagle - Doris; Barbara Kimberley - Harriet; Norman Ball - Droopy; Carolyn Stratton - Miss Watkins; Larry Smith - Jimmy; Kenneth Carroll - Prof. Frazier; Mrs. Florence Lewis - Director, and sponsor of senior class.
