Sectional Baseball Tournament Collins high school will be host to one of the five sectional baseball tournaments to be held in Story county next week.
May 4, 1950 Baseball - Collins' Erwin Frerichs made the game winning hit to score three runs after Nevada pitcher, Riney had walked three straight with two outs in the top of the 7th inning. Final score 3-0 win over Nevada on their diamond. Lonnie Boozell had Collins only other hit. John Duesbury pitched the complete game: runs - 0, hits - 2, strikeouts - 14, walks -1, team errors - only one. Phil Holland was catcher. Semi-final - Collins high school baseball team defeated Melbourne 6-0 in the five-inning game. Holland pitched for the locals and held the visitors to one hit and also hit a triple. (Insert 2005: Lineup not found)
Finals - The boys defeated Mingo 6-0.Collins bunched 3 hits for 3 runs in the first inning, scored one run in the third and two in the seventh inning. Mingo threatened in the sixth with leadoff man singling, walk and another single loading the bases with no outs. Mingo cleanup batter, Gannon, popped out to Cory (1b) for one out. Boozell and Duesbury worked a quickie to trap Rumbaugh off second and Rumbaugh advanced toward third base causing the third base runner to attempt to score. Boozell quickly fired the ball to Holland (catcher) for the putout at home plate. The next batter grounded out to end the scoring threat. Duesbury scattered 6 hits and struck out 6. Lonnie Boozell led the hitting - three singles and double; Bob Johnson - single and double, and Phil Holland's first inning double driving in two runs.
