Adult Evening School - The regular meeting of the Collins Adult Evening school will be held on Monday, March 27, in the high school building. The men's class will consider "Seed Treatment and Seed Bed Preparation." The ladies' group have asked for "Gardening." The special meeting called for "Swine Production and Feeding" on last Monday evening was well attended.
Grade News - Kindergarten We had a lot of fun making airplanes. 2nd Grade Thursday we went to the Gazette office and saw a few interesting machines that helped in making our paper. Mr. Armstrong (Army) operated the linotype machine and the press for us. We also saw the machine for stamping addresses on our Collins Gazettes. Before leaving, Mr. Armstrong gave us each a linotype slug with our names on them. Miss Shepherd from the University of Northern Iowa (formerly Iowa State Teachers college) in Cedar Falls visited our room Tuesday and demonstrated a reading lesson for the grade school teachers. Miss Jungmann gave everyone a sample of Ipana toothpaste. We've been learning the importance of brushing our teeth and the right kinds of food to eat for good teeth. 3rd We have been drawing animal pictures. 4th In History we're learning how much we owe to primitive man for the many things we have today. 5th and 6th In art this week we made portfolios out of colored paper. The knitting class has completed many more things this week. Much of this is done at home. Betty T. has a completed cardigan, David M. a cap, Daisy Mary a doll's cap and mittens, and Rex a scarf. Quentin has finished his cap, Daniel a slipover sweater, Billy two caps and a slipover sweater for his mother, and Elliott has finished a cap.
March 30, 1950 Music Contest Collins has quite a number of entries in the preliminary state music contest to be held at Ogden this weekend. Friday (tomorrow) evening the boys' quartet, consisting of Bob McBride, first tenor; Dick Cory, second tenor; Larry Smith, baritone, and Lane Rice, Bass, and Norma Keagle will play a piano solo, "Clare de Lune" by Debussy. Saturday morning's entries are as follows: Girls' trio with Lola Oswalt as soprano; Norma Keagle, second soprano, and Jackie Keagle, alto; tenor solos, Bob McBride and Dick Cory; clarinet trio, Rosiva Cannon, Shirley Smith and Sandra Long. Those appearing Saturday afternoon are: Girls' sextet with Shirley Smith and Delores Gilley as sopranos, Phyllis Baker and Joyce Tomlinson, second sopranos, and Carolyn Stratton and Dorothy Partridge, altos; mezzo soprano solos, Lola Oswalt and Jackie Keagle.
Grade News - Kindergarten Easter is coming and we have been coloring rabbits and Easter eggs. We know a song about Easter. 1st Grade We are learning an Easter poem "The Easter Bunny." We have Easter pictures on our bulletin boards. We made Easter rabbits with baskets of Easter eggs for decorations in our room. 2nd We've started making bunnies, eggs and chickens for Easter. 4th We have two new charts on our walls. Mary and Dean E. showed pictures that both work and play are exercise. Verlie and Georgiann made another showing of pictures of clean, neat rooms. Jill has brought a doll dressed in fur as we think perhaps primitive man dressed. She also made a hatchet as primitive man made his - tying a small stone to a piece of wood. On Wednesday afternoon we had a real treat when we went into Mrs. Ferris' room and listened to Andy tell us about Latvia, his home country. Thank you, Andy!
