Grade News - Kindergarten The children are having a lot of fun playing in the playhouse that has been added to our room. We want to thank Mr. McKee for the rhythm band he bought for our room this week. Our room is beginning to look like spring as we have grass, baby chickens, kites, and for St. Patrick's Day we have shamrocks. 1st Grade We have pictures of birds on our bulletin board. We made freehand drawings of birds, also. Last Friday the boys and girls enjoyed seeing the high school operetta "Words and Music" in the auditorium. 2nd Some of us brought pictures of birds to school. We made the more common birds in Iowa for our bulletin board. We glued clothespins on the back and snapped them on telephone wires. We have a bouquet of pussy willows in our library corner. 3rd We are enjoying reading the book "Beautiful Joe." We have been decorating the bulletin board for Saint Patrick's Day. 4th We have two new charts on the wall. Jill made one showing food and drinks that are good for us. Dorothy and Sheryl made the other one showing different kinds of materials. 5th and 6th For Art this week, some of us made freehand drawings of birds. Most of them are very nice. Some more things have been completed in the knitting class. David M. wore his pretty gray slipover sweater he had finished to school this week. Gordon has finished his cap. Betty T. and Elliott have finished mittens. Donna F. brought to school what is called a crystal forest. It is made by pouring a solution made of ammonia, salt, water and bluing over coal cinder. It is very pretty we think.

March 23, 1950 - Future Farmers of America (F. F. A.) Coronation Ball was held Friday evening, March 17. The F. F. A. boys and Mr. Maddox, voc ag instructor entertained at a dance for the high school, held in the music/lunch room of the grade school building. The St. Patrick's day theme was beautifully carried out with decorations of green and white. The highlight of the evening was the coronation ceremony. The sweetheart of each class was escorted to a place on the throne by a F. F. A. member: Carol Atwood by Bob McBride; Barbara Kimberley by Phillip Holland; Carolyn Long by John Duesbury; Dorothy Long by Bob Moses. Each girl was then presented with a beautiful corsage of roses. Barbara Kimberley was crowned queen by Kenneth Carroll, master of ceremonies, and was presented with one dozen American Beauty roses. Later she will receive a sweetheart compact which will have the F. F. A. insignia. After crowning of the queen, Mr. Hoover, music teacher, sang "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen," "The Band Played On," and "The Rose of Tralee." Later in the evening, delicious refreshments of shamrock ice cream, cake and punch were served. (Insert 2005: This is the first F. F. A. Saint Patrick's Day Coronation Ball that was carried on as an annual tradition for several years. Mr. Ralph Maddox, Voc Ag instructor, was initiator and critical importance for the successful beginning of this event that became a tradition.)
