Semi-final and Consolation games - The Collins boys' record was very badly spoiled when they were defeated two consecutive nights by Story City and McCallsburg. Collins lost to Story 39-36, leading much of the game, but our defense weakened in the fourth quarter. The hometown boys were definitely not up to par, losing to McCallsburg 42-26. February 2, 1950 Our New Student: Last Wednesday a new and very interesting fellow student joined us. He is Andris Zervins and is already known to everyone as "Andy." Andy was born March 1931 in the country of Latvia, where he lived with his parents until they were forced to move into Germany in 1944. In January 1950 they left Europe and arrived in New York on January 21. His father is now employed by Cyril Lengling, who lives on the C. W. Kimberley farm south of Collins. To a pupil accustomed to the strictness of European high schools, ours in America seem considerably less difficult. Andy has previously carried 12 subjects at one time. He is familiar with many of the same sports as we are, including basketball, football, volleyball, swimming, but has never seen a baseball game. Andy hopes to receive his high school diplomas this year and to enter college in the fall. We are happy to welcome our likeable new students into Collins high school.
