January 19, 1950 Change in Classes: The Government class spent the last two weeks studying about Iowa. Each student in the class made a report on one subject concerning our state. These were given as the program at the past PTA meeting. Last Monday Geography replaced Government, which is a one-semester course. Commercial English replaces the Speech class and is taught by Mr. McKee. Seven junior and senior girls are taking Advanced Home Ec under Miss Halterman. Sewing will be their project.
Basketball - Huxley and Collins boys Friday night played a very close basketball game all the way with Collins the victors by 46-43. Lonnie Boozell and Dick Cory were defensive standouts. Phil Holland season high of 17 points, playing against a tough defensive Huxley center, Truman Lewis. This makes the 14th win for the boys. In their first defeat this season on the home floor the girls lost to Huxley 44-37. It was a hard-fought game with Collins ahead most of the time. Girls Story County Basketball Tournament at Roland: First round - Collins, beaten by Huxley 44-37 last Friday, turned the tables on the Vikings by winning 34-26. A tight Collins defense was a key feature of the game. Good passing by Bonnie Long and Carolyn Long was key to Collins' offense. Half-time score was 19-5 with Huxley scoring only one field goal in the first half. Quarterfinals - Collins defeated Zearing 49-40. Zearing took an early lead before Collins caught up at 13-13 at the first quarter mark. Collins had 22-18 halftime and 35-29 third quarter lead. Collins had balanced scoring with Barbara Kimberley 21 points, Bonnie Long 15 points, and Carolyn Long 11 points. Semifinals held in the Nevada school field house - The girls played Fernald, losing a hard fought game by only three points 35-32. Fernald had to go to the final gun to assure its thrilling victory on never-say-die Collins team. Collins had halftime lead of 18-16 and third quarter 27-25. Three Collins girls fouled out during the third quarter. Fernald had a decided margin in free throws, making 19 of 26 for 73%. Collins made 14 of 25. Forty-four fouls were called with 27 on Collins and 17 on Fernald. Fernald defeated Colo 48-32 in the quarterfinal game.
