Measles - Many of the Collins students are ill with the measles. The epidemic struck the grade school first, but has gradually worked its way up through the grades.
February 19, 1942 - Basketball - Coach Earl Cooper's basketball teams were winners of 2 games at Colo, the boys winning 28-14 and the girls 34-32. (Insert 2004: Box scores not found) The final home games for the season are this coming Monday evening against Melbourne.
The Collins Evening School closed a successful year February 9 with a covered dish supper with 78 people attending. Diplomas were presented to Ladies; Mrs. Ernest Hofer, Mrs. E. W. Coach Earl Cooper treated the boys' basketball team to a steak dinner at the high school home-ec room last Thursday noon. The boys won second place in the County Tournament and this dinner was to celebrate that event. Team members present: Jack Fertig, Wendell Coles, Dorrell Taylor, Charles Kimberley, LaVerne Lillard, John Kingman, Gene Fertig, Arnold Milligan, Harold Thompson, Dale Deal, and Bill Atwood.
March 5, 1942 - Supt. Erickson announces a 7-week kindergarten course will start March 16. This will be for children who will enroll in school next fall. They must be five years of age by July 15, 1942. Parents should contact the school as soon as possible for arrangements to enroll the children. [Insert 2004: Second year of kindergarten]
March 19, 1942 - Basketball - Coach Earl Cooper was host to members of the boys' basketball team dinner at the A. K. Sward home March 13. A two-course dinner was served by Mrs. Sward and Mrs. Fred Renfeldt. Votes were cast for captain of next year's team. LaVerne Lillard was elected captain with Bill Atwood as co-captain. Retiring captain is Jack Fertig and Wendell Coles, retiring co-captain.
Boy's 1941-42 Basketball Season Summary: The team won 14 games and lost five with two of the defeats in tournament games. The Collins teams scored 576 points to the opponents' 415. Collins won - Maxwell 31-17, Melbourne 20-18, Colo 27-21, Rhodes 39-21, State Center 39-23, Van Cleve 35-21, State Center 23-13, Colo 19-17, Milford 24-14, Zearing 28-26, McCallsburg 39-23, St. Anthony 53-9, Melbourne 33-26, Colo 28-14. Collins lost - Maxwell 23-22, Huxley 34-29, Gilbert 20-14, Cambridge 31-30, Cambridge 44-31. Runner-up in Class B Story County Tournament.
