November 20, 1941 A large audience filled the Collins high school auditorium to enjoy the three one-act plays presented by the Collins high school students, under the direction of Adlyn Deere, dramatic coach. The boys' glee club sang three numbers, "Soldier's Chorus," "Kentucky Babe," and "Comrades of the Road" and Miss Johanna Tiffany played a flute solo for between-the-acts. The plays presented were: "Fireman, Save My Child," Harriett Cooper, Bill Atwood, Jack Stratton, Karol Robinson, Anoka Elliott, Margaret Kimberley, Richard Hand and Dorothy Neale. "The Captain Comes Home" Gail Partridge, Anne Fish, Curtis Marsh, Flo Signs. "Eh" Colleen Stratton, Joe Anderson, John Tiffany, Dorrell Taylor, Louise Elliott. The play "Eh" was chosen to be entered in the county contests.
January 2, 1942 - The Ag Boys placed with their livestock in the local Farm Institute show. Those placing are: Richard Long, Forrest Long, Dean Partridge, Otis Huntrods, Keith Swanson, Howard Pitcher, and Joe Tiffany. Sweepstakes was won by Keith Swanson.
Basketball - The girls proved their ability, outplaying Colo 33-12 with Flo Signs scoring 13 points. The guards and forwards exchanged positions in the final quarter. The boys maintained their pace by defeating a much-improved Colo team 27-21. (No box scores found)
January 8, 1942 - There was 15 inches of snowfall and temperatures 15 to 24 below over the past five days. Highway 65 was blocked all day Thursday and much of Friday. "Smoke" Keagle did a good job with his County snowplow in opening up some of the Collins' streets.
Supt. Glen E. Holmes and Miss Beulah Holland were married Tuesday evening. The bride had been teacher of the second grade in Collins the past several years and the bridegroom, superintendent of the local school.
January 22, 1942 - Basketball Schedule - Jan. 23 - State Center H; Jan. 27 - Van Cleve T; Jan. 28, 29, 30 - Girls County Tournament at Maxwell; Feb. 4, 5, 6 - Boys County Tournament at Nevada; Feb. 11, 12, 13 - Girls Sectional; Feb. 17 - Colo T; Feb. 20 - Cambridge H; Feb. 26, 27, 28 - Girls District.
January 28, 1942 - Sunday Broadcast - A group of students will broadcast over Station KFJB of Marshalltown Sunday at 5:30 to 6:00 P.M. The group includes a verse choir, girls' trio, Yvonne Torry with her accordion, and Flo Signs will sing.
Basketball - Collins boys won over State Center 39-23 with Kimberley scoring 12 points and Fertig 10. Collins junior high boys lost 24-17. The boys stopped Van Cleve 35-21 after a 12-10 half-time lead. Lillard led the scoring with 11 points. The Collins and Van Cleve girls played a thriller with the score tied 27-27. Half-score was 11-11. Deal led the scoring with 14 points. The local girls lost to Huxley in the first round of the County Tournament, 37-17. (Insert 2004: Box scores not found)
February 12, 1942 - The Collins boys were defeated by Gilbert in the finals of the County Tournament. The locals made a fine showing and received the runner-up trophy in Class B. They defeated Milford 24-14 in the first round, Colo 19-17 in the second round, and Zearing 28-26 in the semi-finals. (Insert 2004: No box scores found - believe highest to date by the boys' team)
