March 27, 1941 Kindergarten. Four weeks kindergarten starts Monday and will continue until April 25. A dozen have registered to date and others who wish to have their children enrolled should make contact immediately. It is not essential that children register for kindergarten to be eligible to enter first grade next fall. The kindergarten class will be held each school day from 9:00 A.M. until 2:30 P.M. From 2:30 P.M. until 4:00 P.M., children from the country will be supervised in play ground activities. Miss Swenson will be in charge of the kindergarten work and will be assisted by high school students. [Insert 2004: First kindergarten class]
Student Teachers - Wednesday a new system of teaching was inaugurated in high school. Instead of being taught, the pupils taught and the teachers took a vacation. Friday afternoon members of the high school taught the elementary grades during the absence of the teachers who were attending a conference.
April 3, 1941 Sports - Baseball practicebegan Monday, March 31. The junior boys won the High School basketball tourney, defeating the sophomores in the finals.
The physics class is beginning a unit on electricity and magnetism. The tenth grade is now reading the story of Julius Caesar for part of their course in literature.
Collins is participating in the music contest at Nevada. Those taking part are: Solos - Flo Signs, Minnie Mae Sheibley, Naomi Gilley, Olin Pitcher, and Betty Griffieon; Duet - Snare Drum - Kenneth Kracht, Gene Fertig; Trio - Daisy Renfeldt, Dorothy Titus, Naomi Gilley; Boys and Girls Glee Clubs and School Band.
Other School Activity Groups: Optic Staff - 24 members; Dramatic Club - 34 members; Pep Club - 66 members; Girls' Glee Club - 28 members (Mr. Sparks - Director); Boys' Glee Club - 21 members (Mr. Sparks - Director); Band - 38 members (Mr. Sparks - Director); Vocal Soloists - 16 members (Mr. Sparks - Director); Future Farmers of America - (Agriculture) - 13 members (Mr. Perkins - Teacher).
April 17, 1941 We, the members of the Collins High School American Government Class, hereby submit some suggestions to the Mayor of the Town of Collins on home town improvement and beautification: Sixteen suggestions were submitted. Two eye-catching ones are: All ashes cleaned up at once and all chickens should be kept in tight pens.
April 24, 1941 Curtis Marsh, 8th Grade students in Collins School and Story County's representative in the State Spelling Contest made a fine showing. He stood until the 10th and final round of the oral contest. We are proud of Curtis for his work and congratulate him on his fine showing.
Advanced Homemaking Class held a 6:30 dinner at the home of Lois Hattery. The class has been studying manners and table settings, so they put this into practice. The class was divided into two groups to entertain the other group. The hostesses were Lois Hattery, Ruth Lund, Isabelle Coughenour, and Luella Dolph. The other group will entertain this group at Daisy Renfeldt's at a later date.
The four-week kindergarten term ends this week, and has been highly successful. This is the first kindergarten class.
