March 17, 1927 Coach Applegate attended the Story County high school baseball meeting at Story Hotel in Nevada. A schedule and officials were agreed upon. The six teams comprising the league are: Collins, Gilbert, Maxwell, Milford, Slater and Zearing. The Championship will be determined by a percentage basis and league will probably be entered in State Tournament.
March 17, 1927 The County Spelling Contest will be held at Nevada March 26 at 10:30 p.m. Each consolidated school may enter two and each rural school one speller. Pupils enrolled in eighth grade or below will be eligible. Contest is sponsored by the Des Moines Register.
April 7, 1927 Collins Gazette Changes Owners. With this issue, the Collins Gazette passes into the hands of the undersigned, J. R. (Army) Armstrong, who came here the last of the week from Des Moines, where he has been employed for the last year and a half on The Evening Tribune and Iowa Homestead. Previous to that time he conducted papers for himself for several years, and worked in various printing plants, having twenty-one years experience in the business.
April 14, 1927 Collins high will play their first home game this afternoon with Zearing. Zearing beat Milford Friday by a score of 9 to 8. This means that Collins will have to beat Zearing or let them take the lead in the league.
Collins High lost their first baseball game to Maxwell Friday, by a score of 7 to 6. Maxwell was held to 3 hits but in the meantime a large number of free bases were given, along with several decisive errors. The Collins infield seems to be in good shape and the rest of the week will be spent in preparing an outfield that will help in defeating Zearing here this afternoon. (No box score found)
