THE HOUGHTON ANCESTRY

Burns, Mary
Beardsworth, Alice
Beardsworth, Mary
Beardsworth, John
Houghton, William
Houghton, Robert

WILLIAM HOUGHTON, the son of Robert Houghton and Mary Burns was born 2 Apr 1790 in Inskip, St Michael of Wyre, Lancashire, England, and died 16 Aug 1867.

He married (1) ALICE BEARDSWORTH 30 Jun 1812 in Leyland, Lancashire, England, daughter of JOHN BEARDSWORTH and MARY BEARDSWORTH of Farington, England. She was born Dec 14, 1798 in Clayton, Lanscashire, England, and died 19 Jul 1832 in Leyland, Lancashire, England.

He married (2) ELIZABETH WHITEHEAD, born in 1796 in England, about 1834.

He married (3) MARTHA (Margaret) THOMAS RIGBY 02 Oct 1855 in Jackson County, Iowa, daughter of JOHN THOMAS. She was born 12 Aug 1816, and died 27 Oct 1890. The children of William and Alice Beardsworth were Richard (Margaret Harrison), James (Eliza Thomas), Elizabeth, Moses (Elizabeth Thomas) , Ann, Alice (William Greenwood), Ruth, Aaron, Margaret (Summer) and John. The children of William and Elizabeth Whitehead were Benjamin and Ann. The child of William and Martha Thomas Rigby is Nettie Ann (Clow).

Alice Houghton Greenwood, a daughter of William Houghton, wrote a brief history on March 27, 1880 to her grandchildren. She included that “On the 12th of March, 1842, my father (William Houghton) received the Gospel in England, hence we came to this land (America) with a company of Latter Day Saints and landed in New Orleans on the 25th of April, 1842, in the sailing vessel, “Hanover”. (Note: This occurred after the death of Alice Beardsworth, his first wife. William came to America with his second wife, Elizabeth Whitehead and his children from his first marriage.)

William Houghton, a farmer, at the age of 50 and Elizabeth Houghton, age 40 came to the USA in 1842. William and “Betty”, along with William’s children James, 25; Moses, 20; Alice, 15; Ruth, 15; Margaret, 12 and Ann, 1, boarded the ship Hanover in Liverpool England on March 12, 1842. Prior to that time they were living on the old “Smith” farm, according to 1841 England census on microfilm. They landed in New Orleans on the 25th day of April 1842 and took passage on a steam boat and landed at the city of Nauvoo, Illinois on May 15, 1842. From Nauvoo, they went to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa where they lived until the time of their death. William Houghton became a citizen on September 6, 1847. They are buried in the Old City Cemetery between River Drive and Rockingham Road, just east of Division Street on the southwest side of Davenport. A memorial stone was purchased by Isabelle Foster, to mark the grave of William Houghton. Previously there was no stone at his grave, or if there was, it had been removed and had disappeared in the soil.

A deed was recorded on June 23, 1847 from Antoine LeClaire to William Houghton, for $125.00 for property located at Locust and Main Street. According to Martha’s (Margaret’s) obituary this house was located at 124 West Locust Street. Martha had a sister named Margaret, and I believe that possibly both sisters were named Margaret, but the second one was called Martha. A lot of European families named the children after the godparent, thus several children in the same family had the same first name, and were thus known by their middle or “nick” name. The house was still standing in the late 1950’s, and we believe that “Kentucky Fried Chicken” is now in that location, on the north side of Locust Street.

Houghton, James
Thomas, Eliza
Thomas, John
Thomas, Elizabeth

Child of WILLIAM HOUGHTON and ALICE BEARDSWORTH is:
JAMES HOUGHTON was born 03 Sep 1814 in Clayton le Woods, Lancashire, England, and died 15 May 1884 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. He married ELIZA THOMAS in1844, in Davenport, Iowa, as far as I can determine. Eliza is the daughter of JOHN and ELIZABETH ________ THOMAS. She was born 14 Jan 1819 in Flintshire, England, and died 15 Apr 1886 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.

The 1860 Davenport Directory shows James and Eliza Houghton living on Ripley Street, between 11th and 12th Street. According to the April 17, 1886 obituary of Eliza Houghton, that address was 111 Ripley Street. James and his wife Eliza lived at this home for 35 years. The obituary states that James was a farmer from England and gardening was his occupation from the day he arrived in Davenport until the day he died. Apparently gardening was considered the occupation of a farmer. The obituary also states that Eliza died at her home just north of the city limits on Harrison Street road.

The names of James and Eliza have been memorialized in a marble roster of the early pioneers who settled in Scott County before 1846. According to the “History of Scott County, Iowa, 774, Vol 1 R 977.7 at the Davenport Public Library the stone was originally erected in 1901 by the “Old Settler’s Association” and was placed at the “old” Scott County Courthouse in Davenport, Iowa. The stone is now at Scott County Park, just north of Davenport. Buffalo Bill Cody and his parents also have their name on that stone.

James and Eliza Houghton are buried in the Oakdale cemetery on the hill, facing Eastern Avenue. Also buried in that Houghton plot are Mary J. Houghton, Frank Nichols (child), Ruth Houghton (child) James W. Houghton, John Houghton, Rachel A. LaRue, Clara B. Houghton, Arthur E. Houghton and Dr. James R. Houghton.

From the Obituary on James W. Houghton of “The Davenport Democrat and Leader” April 13, 1924, “James W. Houghton was probably one of the best known pioneer firemen in the city. As a youth, he joined the volunteer firemen and served as a torch bearer until he was promoted to actually battle the blaze. During those early days of fighting fires, the deceased distinguished himself with his bravery.” It also tells about how he fought a “big east end fire”. The obituary reads “over 42 hours he fought the blaze, only quitting when he was too weak to continue”.

Also from the obit - “For many years, he was captain of hose company no. 3. He held this rank when he retired in 1913. A few months before retiring, he was nearly killed when the department was called to fight a small blaze in the residential neighborhood. When the wagon was pulled around the corner of Dover court and Brady street, Houghton lost his balance and was thrown to the ground. For three days, he was unconscious and was not expected to live. Injuries sustained, made him retire from the department.

It was in the days of well-groomed horses that longed for the fire gong to ring, so they could dash in the harness and respond to the call, that he was on the department. Houghton took great pride in the horses in his station and wagering was not infrequent between the various stations as to their running caliber.

When Waldo Becker was mayor of Davenport, during 1906 and 1907, Houghton served as fire chief for a period of six months. He retired asking to be placed at the hose house where he had the horses and the excitement of riding behind those galloping steeds.”

Dan Spire, Chief of the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department and intimate friend of the deceased, delivered the following eulogy. “Even after he had been placed on the retired list of the department, which my brothers, is the Honor Roll of the Fire Service, his marked ability won him the appointment of City Fire Warden, which position he filled with credit to his city. He was commended by the National Board of Fire Underwriters for his splendid service to this office.”

James W. Houghton was a graduate of the old Griswold College, where the present high school building (Central High School) now stands. Before their marriage, Clara Belle LaRue was a school teacher. In those days, female teachers could not teach if they were married.

We have a business card from Clara Belle LaRue Houghton:

Mrs. J. W. Houghton
Barred Plymouth Rock Fancier
Stock Always for Sale           Eggs in Season
WEST PARK LANE
Old Phone 1729-J           DAVENPORT, IOWA

This would have been in the property now known as 2628 Scott Street, which is on the north side of what is now Central Park.

In the Eulogy of Clara Belle Houghton on January 12, 1956, it is mentioned that in additional to her family loving her, all of her friends fell under her “maternal spirit”, her radiant personality and her friendliness. Almost mentioned was her deep organ like voice which was even deeper than the voice of her daughter, Florence Houghton Sargent.

A grandson remembers an organ in the home of his great grandparents. He doesn’t know if his grandmother played the organ, but figured it played a large part in their son, James Houghton’s, love of music.

Her sense of duty and willingness to give the last full measure of devoted effort were evidenced by the care and comfort she and a beloved sister, Rachel lavished upon each other. Her sister, Rachel, had a deformed hip because of falling out of an apple tree as a child. This did not stop Rachel and Clara Belle from making homemade candy. Originally Rachel was the proprietor of LaRue Candy Company in Kansas City, Kansas until 1939. Some family members recall talking about how she had to deal with the mobs during that time period.

The death of Clara Belle Houghton was the third in her family in a month period. She lost two sisters, Rachel LaRue, who died on December 12, 1955 and Lydia LaRue Seaman, who died on December 18, 1955.

From Clara Belle’s obituary of the Davenport Times on January 9, 1956, we learn that she attended school in both Buffalo Prairie, Illinois and in Burlington, Iowa.

James Houghton and his wife Clara Belle made their home at 2628 Scott Street. Originally this land tract contained around 25 acres, but they sold a good share of the acreage to St. Vincent’s orphanage. Part of this property is now an athletic field for Assumption High School and also used by St. Ambrose university.

At that time, they returned to Davenport, to live at 2140 Jersey Ridge road. John and Mary Collins are buried at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa. John Collins was a carpenter by trade.

According to an article in the Tri City Star of Davenport, Iowa "An inquest was held, regarding the death of John Collins, who was found lying on an embankment, Thursday noon, near the Milwaukee railroad tracks in the 1900 block of Elm Street, in Davenport, Iowa. His death was attributed to heart disease by coroner Skelley, who said he believed Collins had died a few hours before his body was found by a resident who lives near the embankment.

Police said they had learned that it was a custom of Collins to ride about the city on his bicycle and for him also to take long walks. It is believed that he left the bicycle, found east of the bridge, to walk down the embankment and then across the tracks to the other side where he was apparently stricken.
