Restoration by Stan Culley

"THIS IS A PICTURE OF WATSON KENNEDY'S STONE BEFORE I STARTED CLEANING IT TODAY. THE PICTURE LOOKS A LITTLE DARK; BUT IT WAS IN THE SHADE WHEN I STARTED. THERE WAS A TREE NEAR BY CASTING A SHADOW RIGHT OVER THE STONE; BUT I DID NOT WANT TO WAIT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS TO GET A BETTER PICTURE." ~ STAN D. CULLEY

"THE LICHEN WAS STARTING TO FORM A HEAVY LAYER OF GROWTH ON HIS STONE. IT STILL STAINED THE STONE A LITTLE BUT I WILL TREAT IT WITH SOME STUFF TO KILL THE GROWTH OF THE LICHEN AND IT WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE THE STONE LOOK EVEN BETTER IN A FEW MONTHS. I WILL GO OUT FRIDAY AND TREAT IT WITH THE ANTI-BIOLOGICAL GROWTH LIQUID THAT WE PUT ON THE MILITARY STONES TO KEEP THEM LOOKING GOOD EACH YEAR."

The work progressing as Stan Culley labored to clean the tombstone of Watson D. Kennedy, LeMars Memorial Cemetery, Block 1, June 2012.

"THIS IS A PICTURE OF SOME OF THE EQUIPMENT I USE TO CLEAN THE STONES - NOTICE THE ELECTRIC DRILL AND A SPECIAL ROTARY BRUSH IN THE DRILL. I USE AMONIA WATER AND THAT BRUSH TO CLEAN WITH AND THEN RINSE WITH CLEAN WATER. I HAVE A GENERATOR ON THE TRUCK WITH A LONG EXTENSION CORD TO RUN THE DRILL."

"THE FLAG HOLDER BEFORE I INSTALLED IT INTO THE
CONCRETE BASE. NOTICE THE BOTTOM OF THE BRASS ROD. I BENT THE END OF IT SO PEOPLE CANT COME ALONG AND PULL IT UP OUT OF THE CONCRETE. I ALSO MADE THE SQUARE HOLE I MOUNTED IT IN SO IT TAPERS AND IS WIDER AT THE BOTTOM THAN THE TOP. ANOTHER WAY TO DETER PEOPLE FROM TAKING THE HOLDER."

"THIS IS LOOKING STRAIGHT DOWN ON THE MARKER AND YOU CAN SEE THE WET CONCRETE. IT IS LOWER THAN THE GROUND AROUND IT BY ABOUT AN INCH OR SO AND THEN I PUT DIRT AROUND IT ONCE THE CONCRETE SET UP A LITTLE."
