Lutheran Christian Day School
Transcribed by Lynn McCleary, April 18, 2015Since the early days of Wilton there has been a Lutheran Christian Day School in the town. At first the pastor was the teacher and school was held in a room in the parsonage. After the great Wilton fire of 1874 which destroyed the parsonage and Lutheran Church building, a school and parsonage were put up before the new church was built. Forty pupils were in attendance at that time.
For two years, 1876-1878, a special teacher had charge of the school. When Zion congregation was formed the first building erected was used for both school and church. Later a church was built in 1892 and the original building was used for school purposes. In 1929 the present brick church was constructed and the frame church building was moved a short distance east and converted into a two-room school with a parish hall. The staff has been composed of two teachers since that time.
In 1918 Mr. Henry Brammeier, Jr. bought a lot across the street south from the church and the congregation built a teacherage on it.
H. L. Waech served the school for 34 years and was a valued member of the Wilton Community for many more years. He was married to Wilma Jipp of Wilton.
