Oliver W. Stroud mustered in as a private Aug. 15, 1862, at Camp Dodge.

Oliver W. Stroud killed by a musket shot at the Battle of Jenkin's Ferry, Saline River, Arkansas, on April 30, 1864.

Affidavit of Elvira P. Stroud:

"Oliver Stroud and Elvira Barnes were married at Birmingham, New York on the 17th of March, 1836, by Elder Safford, minister of the gospel." She further stated that no church or civil record existed, and that witnesses to their wedding were either dead or could not be located.

Affidavits of D. F. Eakins and H. A. Tolls/Tolles, both of Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa stated that they knew the couple for a period of several years and they had lived together as man and wife all that time.

Retained the law firm of Dale & Edmundson, Glenwood, to represent her claim for pension. The only communication in the file from the lawyers to the Government was dated April 25, 1865.

Elvira P. Stroud was granted a pension of $8.00 a month with a certificate numbered 46747, dated May 10, 1865, with pay retroactive to the date of death of her husband.

Elvira P. Stroud submitted the names and ages of the four children of Oliver W. Stroud and herself:

  1. Minnie Stroud, born 1852 [Transcriber's note: by the time the pensioned was approved, Minnie had "aged out". Only children less than 16 years were eligible to be included for pensions.]
  2. Luther H. Stroud, born Sept. 4, 1854
  3. Carrie M. Stroud, born June 10, 1856
  4. Frank J.C. Stroud, born Nov. 16, 1857
She stated they all resided with her in her home in Mount Olive, Mills Co., lowa.

Affidavit of James S. Ewings, retired physician and surgeon, Waushara County, Wisconsin, dated September 15, 1869, stated that he attended the birth of a male child on September 4, 1864, later named Luther H. Stroud; he also attended the birth of a female child on June 10, 1856, later named Carrie M. Stroud; both were the children of Oliver and Elvira Stroud.

Affidavit of Mrs. Sarah Lang, Waushara County, Wisconsin, dated Sept. 14, 1869, stated that she attended the birth of an infant, born the 16th day of November, 1857 and afterward named Frank J. C. Stroud, child of Oliver and Elvira Stroud. She stated no physician was in attendance.

By the "Act of July 25, 1866", the three youngest children of Elvira P. Stroud were added to her pension allowance at the rate of $2 a month per child by a certificate dated Dec. 9, 1869.

Elvira P. Stroud dropped from the pension rolls on account of her death on Dec. 15, 1897 in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa.
