ELWOOD, GORDON AND MARY
      The parents of Mary Elwood, Dale and Bertha Kempton, spent their early life in and around Tabor, Iowa; later they bought a farm northeast of Malvern. In 1967 they retired and moved to Silver City, where they continue to live.
      Mary was born in Omaha, Nebraska, December 8, 1931 and spent her childhood on a farm near Tabor. At the age of fourteen her parents moved and she attended high school at Henderson, graduating in 1949.
      Gordon’s parents, Joe and Gladys Elwood, were born and spent their early life around Red Oak and Elliott, Iowa. They started farming near Elliott, later moved to a farm near Red Oak. Now they have retired and moved to Elliott.
      Gordon was born in Red Oak, September 18, 1927 and grew up on a farm near Elliott and also Red Oak, where he attended country schools and Stanton, Iowa High School.
      Gordon and Mary started farming near Red Oak, then moved to a farm near Silver City for three years. In February 1960 they moved to Silver City so Gordon would be closer to his construction work in Omaha, where he worked for two years. In the fall of 1961 the Post Office was taking applications for Postmaster; Gordon applied. On December 2, 1961 he started as Acting Postmaster and was appointed Postmaster June 19, 1963. In 1972 we moved to an acreage five miles south of Silver City.
     We have five children: Vickie, the oldest, married Stephen Felos. They have three children: Dusty, Jeff and Jared. Their home is two miles southwest of Glenwood on an acreage. Stephen works for Robert’s Dairy in Omaha.
     April married Clyde Gillespie and have four children: Jason, Sarah, Shane and Christopher. They live nine miles southeast of Silver City on an acreage. Clyde and April both work in Red Oak.
     Terry lives and works in Red Oak.
     Katherine is our newly wed: she married Byron Carper. Their home is in Malvern where Byron works:
     Katherine is employed in Red Oak. Kevin is in the 10th grade at Glenwood High School.

 

EVANS, KENNETH
     Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth (Marj.) Evans, Hastings, Iowa. Celebrated their Golden Wedding, Sept. 9, 1979.
     They lived in Pottawattamie County until 1943 when they moved to the Malvern, Hastings area. Marj. is a native of Silver City and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mass. She graduated from the Silver City High School. Kenneth is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Evans and is a native of the Ava, Mo. area. He came to Mills County in 1926.
     Natalie married Irvin Schoening and they have one son Wendell. Wendell married Christine Owens and they have two daughters, Jodeene and Wendy Lou.
     Etta married Oscar Neighbors and they have one daughter and four sons, Kenneth, Harold, Nancy, Steven and Rodney. Kenneth married Janice Price and they have two sons, Jeff and Wayne. Harold married Nita Stoker and they have five children, Joni, Mickeal Mark, Mitch and Julie. Nancy married Harold Steward and they have a son Randy and a daughter Toni. Steven married Elaine Kerns and they have one son Jason., Rodney is unmarried.
     Edward E. Jr. passed away on May 21, 1947 of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 18½ years.
     Ed was an outdoor man. He enjoyed farming and his hobbies were hunting, fishing and trapping. He was a familiar figure, walking through the fields and following Silver Creek to check his trap lines. He was an excellent marksman and there is no way of knowing the number of thousands of wild game he bagged.
     Bessie was an expert and knew all the tricks in preparing and cooking the various kinds of game she turned into delectable food.
