        J. D. Van Dyke was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, November 18, 1889. He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Johnson and moved to a farm in what is now a part of Muscatine, in 1854.

        After his first wife's death, Mr. Van Dyke was united in marriage to Hannah A Fowler. He purchased a farm near Fredonia and resided there until 1859, when he moved to Fredonia and opened a general store. He continued in business until his health failed and his death occurred in 1889. He was a member of Free Mason, and as such, organized a lodge in Indiana. He was buried by the order. Funeral services were conducted at the Fredonia Methodist church by Rev. Micajah Reeder, and burial in the Van Dyke cemetery nearby.
