MRS. MARTHA (WAGNER) GEORGE
Transcribed by Beverly Gerdts, submitted June 13, 2017Jessie Wagner was one of the early settlers of Concord township; was born in 1834 in Daupin county, Pennsylvanian. His parents, Henry and Hanna (Martin) Wagner, also natives of Pennsylvania.

... Pennsylvania. Mrs. Wagner came to Iowa with her sister during the early days of its history. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wagner, Martha George, Maggie Lupton, Josephene Johnson, Cynthia Lee, Lavina Blake and Henry, who was united in marriage to Marietta Snyder.
Mr. and Mrs. Wagner made their home in Fredonia for many years. Mr. Wagner passed away in 1903, and Mrs. Wagner died in March, 1915.
Mrs. Martha Wagner George was the wife of Leonhard George, and came to Fredonia in the spring of 1917. She was a true christian lady and beloved by all who knew her. She spent her life doing the Lord's work and befriending others. She was active in church work, acting as superintendent of the Sunday school for many years and was teacher in the Sunday school, or doing anything she could to help. She was an active member of the church club, and a wonderful neighbor and friend. Besisdes rearing a nice family of four boys and two girls she had the care of two grandsons, Harry and Jessie, sons of Mr. an Mrs. Jessie George.
Her children were Mrs. Fannie Litterl, Mrs. Maud Blankenhorn, Jessie Roy, Frank and Leonhard.
Roy enlisted in the navy in World war I. Jessie made his home with Mrs. George, worked in the button factory for several years, owned and operated a service station on the corner where the old blacksmith ship stood for so many years. Then in April 17, 1930, he purchased the property over in Columbus Junction, across from the post office and built a service station.
Mr. Leonhard George passed away June 17, 1933, Jessie passed away June 10, 1934, and Mrs George passed away April 19, 1945.
Jessie Jr., enlisted in the Air Force in 1935, and is stationed at San Bernadino, California . Harry is employed in California near there. Mrs. Maud (George) Blankenhorn lives near Fredonia and reared a nice family of three girls and one boy. Maxine taught school in Fredonia in 1944-45 and 1945-46, taught all eight grades with 32 pupils one year, and 27 the next.
