CLYDE CAREY
Transcribed by Beverly Gerdts, submitted June 13, 2017Clyde Carey, son of Thomas and Emma May (Edmondson), was united in marriage to Miss Effie Gruber, a native of Nebraska and daughter of Jake and Elizabeth Gruber.
Clyde enlisted in the army April 2,1917, at Washington, Iowa, and went overseas with the Company L-168 infantry, the famous Rainbow division. And was released from service may 17, 1919, at Camp Dodge.
Mr. and Mrs. Carey purchased a farm near Fredonia in 1935. After farming for two years, they purchased the lot where the Cooperative store burned, and built a nice store building in the fall of 1937, where they have successfully operated a grocery store. In 1939, they purchased the Reed property and moved to town. On Jun 14, 1950, during a severe electric storm, the house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. That fall they rebuilt a nice bungalow type home. Mr and Mrs Carey are the parents of one son, Stanley K.
It is my good fortune to live neighbors to the Careys, and Mrs. Carey is one of the finest people I ever hope to have as a friends. For the past year, she has been in poor health, and the cards of good wishes and friends who call, testify to the good neighbor policy they have always lived by. Mr. and Mrs. Carey have never withheld help to anyone who might need it, or a friendly word of cheer. They are the kind of neighbors we need with us always.
The son, Stanley K., was united in marriage to Izola Estella Graham, of Muscatine, and they have been blessed with one son, Jimmy, and three lovely daughters, Patsy, who is attending college at Cedar Falls, Judy is a junior in high school, and little Susie goes to grade school. Jimmie tool a special course in highway engineering, and is employed with the State highway construction department.
After Effie's health began to fail, they turned the store management over to the son, Stanley and Izola, with the very efficient help of the daughters.
