Mathew and Julia (Brumage) brown the parents of our subject, were natives of Indiana and Virginia, and were the parents of seven children, James L., Emily C., wife of William Marshall, Thomas M., Hugh P., Newton J., Elizabeth and Bonfield. James L. was united in marriage with Cynthia Coulter, in September, 1855, and spent five years in Buteau county, Ill., then came to Louisa county and purchased 80 acres of land on section 17, Concord township.
Three children graced their union: Alice, who became the wife of Henry Bedwell, a resident of Concord township, Charley L., a clerk in a railroad station in Lincoln, Nebraska, and L. Grant, who was one of the leading farmers in Concord township, and one of the prominent citizens of this community. Hugh P. was the one mentioned elsewhere in this history, that took care of the Fredonia water tank.
