In the mid 1940’s the Church of God Board members purchased a building from two carpenters, Harry Pease and Guy Watson, who had used it as a storage facility. Church members moved that building from 2nd Street in Wapello (across the street from the Ford Dealer) to a lot on Prairie Street that had been purchased from a Mr. Grimm.
Reverend Walter Peck and Church members worked to repair and renovate that former lumber storage building; the first Church of God (Holiness) building in Wapello. Installation of seats, a piano, light fixtures, and a heating stove completed the renovation project.
Pastors who served the Church of God in Wapello were: Reverend Walter Peck, Ethel Saums, Reverend Bethune, Reverend Eugene Birt, Reverend Orvil Price, Reverend Burtus Robertson.
The Church was closed in the 1950’s and a new Church of God was built at Oakville, drawing some of its members from the former Wapello congregation.
Mrs. Oleta Schaper now lives in the former Church of God building on Prairie Street in Wapello.
