GLADWIN CHURCH
Gladwin, Iowa

Transcribed by Sharon Elijah, September 18, 2016

A young woman held a meeting in a tent in Gladwin in the fall of 1909. The first Sunday Schools were held in the Gladwin depot. Agent, C. S. Allen was superintendent. He also served after the church was built until he was transferred. Gladwin Community Church was built by the Devore brothers and dedicated on February 12, 1911 by Rev. Smith. Tommy Devore preached some there. Not having any denominational ties, Gladwin often did not have a minister. Columbus Junction Methodist ministers sometimes preached there in the afternoons. Rev. A. E. Schwenk of the Salem Church solemnized a few weddings there.

Otto Devore organized an evening Epworth League there for the young folks about 1930. Neighboring ministers conducted funerals in Gladwin. Virgil Blosser, former Wayland newspaper publisher preached there about 1950.

Sam Bowser, a retired Methodist minister preached there for a couple of years.

In August of 1975, the church building was sold and moved north and a little east about 3 miles and made into a nice private home.
