The early history of the Columbus Community Free Methodist Church is tied to the Morning Sun circuit. About 1881, the Morning Sun and Winfield circuit consisted of five preaching points. Later the work was known as the Morning Sun and Cairo circuit under the ministry of W. E. Boger in 1890. From these early days the ministers at Morning Sun preached at what was known as the Dixie School House occasionally.

In 1912, the circuit was known as the Morning Sun and Columbus City circuit. On March 13, 1912, the “Free Methodist Church of Columbus City” articles were filed. That year a church building was purchased from a denomination known as the Seceders. Services were held in the church for several years along with services at the school house. In about 1921, this church was moved to the site of the old Dixie school house and was known as the Dixie Church. The church showed tremendous growth while the work at Morning Sun declined. Services were discontinued in 1944 in Morning Sun. A parsonage was purchased in 1947 in Columbus City for the pastor.

In 1958, the former Presbyterian Church in Columbus City was purchased and “Dixie” became known as the “ Columbus City Free Methodist Church.” This church building had once been located near the Columbus City cemetery and had been moved to its present site. In 1962, the church was re-incorporated and the name changed to “Columbus Community Free Methodist church” to reflect a service to a larger community,….

... including Columbus Junction and Fredonia.

In 1963, two lots east of the church were bought and in October 1966, plans for a new parsonage were begun. Pastor V. D. Bundy and family occupied the new house in October 1967, and the old parsonage was sold. The parsonage load was paid off in December 1973.
