Pleasant Grove Cemetery
Van Buren Township
Silverwood's Second Addition

Land Description

On Oct. 15, 1872, there was filed in Deed Record X, pages 181, 182, of the County Records a plat of “Silverwood's Addition to Silverwood's Addition to Pleasant Grove Burying Ground" "located on the Northeast Quarter of the Southeast Quarter of Section 34, Township 76 North, Range 12 West of the 5th P.M. The Northeast corner of Block 1 is 6 feet west of the Northwest corner of Silverwood's Addition to Pleasant Grove Burying Ground. There are five blocks and eight lots in a block. The size of the lots are 12 ft. by 24 ft. The alleys are 6 ft. in width. There is one street 20 feet in width on south side of Block 2." This plot was surveyed by George W. Halferty, County Surveyor of Keokuk County.

On Oct. 3, 1872, Ellen W. Silverwood in her own right; Ellen W. Silverwood as guardian for Charles Silverwood, Oscar Silverwood, and Lillie Silverwood; Fannie McClain; and C. S. McClain acknowledged that of their own free will and with their consent have caused a survey to be made of the tract and plot of ground to be known as Silverwood's Addition to Silverwood's Addition to Pleasant Grove Burying Ground to be used for burial purposes only and to be sold in lots as designated on the plat. Notarized before and by E. W. McJunkin, Notary Public in and for Keokuk County on Oct. 3, 1872

Note: On the plat used currently by the Pleasant Grove Cemetery Association, the blocks have a different numbering sequence to fit the sequence of Block numbers of the first and third additions by Silverwood. Thus, Block 1 becomes Block 25; Block 2, 24; Block 3, 23; Block 4, 22; and Block 5, 21.

Headstones

Note: V in the margin before a name designates a veteran. M in the margin before a name designates that there is no stone at the grave, but a funeral home metal marker marks the grave site. No attempt was made to estimate the number of vacant spaces in the rows between the headstones read. Those spaces may represent unused burial plots or burials without headstones.
