Jefferson County’s Insane

This week the insane commissioners of this county received word from the trustees of the Mt. Pleasant asylum that the institution was over crowded and that Jefferson county’s quota of patients was exceeded by six persons, and that it would be necessary to return some of them for care by the county.  The number to be returned is four, and the patients are John ACKLES, Hecla M. DUDLEY, Zilphia K. NOBLE, and John B. GOBBLE, all considered incurable, but nothing is said as to their condition otherwise.  How Jefferson county is to provide for these insane is a question for the commissioners and Board of Supervisors to determine.  At the poor farm now are six rooms fitted up for the use of insane patients, and all, we believe, are now occupied.  The accommodations and treatment – although as good probably as could be given outside of an asylum – are not what they should be by any means.  If this plan of returning patients to their homes is to be further pursued it will be far better for each county to provide its own asylum and treat its own demented people at the start.  We see nothing now for Jefferson county to do but erect a suitable building, and do the work which it has been presumed heretofore the asylum would do.

County Correspondence.
Libertyville Items.

Our merchants are getting in their new stock of spring goods.  The last two weeks has been a splendid time for making maple sugar and syrup, and those who have trees are putting in their time.  We hear that E. W. WARNER has made about ten gallons from trees growing on his farm south east of town.  D. W. GARBER, who was burnt out not long ago, has started a grocery and hotel combined in the house where W. C. RICHARDSON kept hotel.  We think he will do a thriving business.  A. W. JACKSON has moved from his farm into town.  John ANDERSON, who was in town on a visit, went back to his home in Hamburg, Iowa, where he is engaged in the mercantile business.  Jos. REYNOLDS started last week to the northern part of the state after cattle to take to the Black Hills.  Mrs. Ralph SUMMERS is recovering from her late sickness.  Mrs. John FAMULENER is dangerously ill.  Butter is worth fifteen cents per pound, and eggs 11 cents per dozen.  The town has been scarce of wood of late, but the roads are beginning to mend and there will be plenty in the market soon.              Victor.

Burglar’s Visits.

Monday night the residence of T. R HOWLETT, in the eastern part of the city, was entered by burglars.  They first forced an entrance through a kitchen window, and finding a locked door prevented them from getting into the front part of the house, broke open a window in the parlor.  HOWLETT says they got nothing but a cigar or two, but left a pen knife and a wristlet.

The same night Dr. MILLIKEN’s house, in the same neighborhood, was raided.  A thorough search of almost the entire house was made and the thieves carried off some jewelry, a valise, clothing, etc., valued probably at $40.  As usual there is no clue to the scamps.

Brookville Mention.

The warm weather of the last few days has waked us up in this commuity [sic].  If it remains dry farmers will sow a large scope of wheat this week, not so much as if the spring had opened earlier, perhaps, but most of them have faith in seed time and harvest.  A small congregation met at the Baptist church last Sunday for preaching, the minister failed to put an appearance and it was decided to organize a Union Sabbath School.  J. A. IRELAND was chosen Superintendent; Samuel WISECARVER, Assistant;  N. D. WILLIAMS, Treasurer; Nannie IRELAND, Librarian;  D. E. TINSLEY, Secretary;  Maggie PATTERSON, Assistant.  A contribution to support the school resulted in $7.15.  A lively interest was manifested in the cause.           D. E. T.
