BONFIELD’s Improvement.--Our energetic fellow citizen, Thomas BONFIELD, will soon finish the very convenient basement rooms under his brick dry goods store. He has already rented the front room to TAYLOR & EBERWINE, for a barber shop. The other is for rent. We are glad to see good and substantial improvements, and we consider this one of them. In the meantime, drop into his dry goods store.

Improvements.--Various improvements were going on all over town, and if we fail to note any we hope our patrons will advise us, so that we can "make a note on’t."
The Christian Church, under the energetic supervision of Dr. David LYNN, has again been erected, and will be entirely enclosed in a few days.
Charles DAVID has improved his property on Monroe Street, by putting a handsome portico in front.
George WILKINSON has placed a new picket fence around his house.
Sidewalks and street crossings, and improvements of streets, are the order. The Council should be commended for what it has done and is doing, even if it fails to repeal the hog law, which latter is gaining friends every day.

McDONALD--SNOOK.--June 20, 1871, at the residence of the bride's parents near Acheson, by Rev. B. WALL, Mr. Robert S. McDONALD and Miss Catherine M. SNOOK.

GREGORY--DRUMMOND,--At the office of the officiating justice, in Blackhawk tp. June 18, 1871, by Thomas DIXON, J. P, Mr. Milton GREGORY and Miss Cinderella DRUMMOND.

FARRIER--HUNT,--June 22, 1871, at the Court House, in Fairfield, by Thomas D. EVANS, J. P., Mr. Lewis FARRIER and Miss Sarah HUNT.

Correspondence.--We have on file two letters for publication. One is from Rev. A. LAUBACH, Port Townsend, W. T., who but lately removed to that place from Jefferson county, to labor in that part of the Lord's vineyard. The other from Geo. W. SHELLEY, Elk Point, Dakotah. Mr. SHELLEY has in all probability taken up his residence in Dakotah. Jefferson county loses one of her most valuable and esteemed citizens in the person of Mr. S.

Mrs. R. Richards, of Nashville Station, between Burlington and Keokuk, who had been quarrelling with her husband, lay down on the railroad track before an approaching train on Friday morning, and was cut to pieces. The engineer saw her sit down on the rail, place her hands over her face, and then stretch herself across the track, but he could not stop his train in time to save her life.

Personal.--Our old friend, Capt. P. L. HUYETT, formerly of this county, but now of the great music firm of P. L. HUYETT & Son, St. Joe, is on a visit to Fairfield with his estimable wife. We regret to learn that Mrs. HUYETT’s health is poor, but hope that old friends and old surroundings will benefit her.

MARRIAGES.
RICKEY--MUSSER,--June 27, 1871, at the residence of the bride's parents in Fairfield, by Rev. E. H. CODDINGTON, Dr. A. C. RICKEY, of Toledo, Iowa, and Miss Nannie MUSSER, of this city.
Another couple added to the Innumerable and blessed throng of the married.--May joy be theirs--may the groom never lack for patients, and the bride never have occasion to lose her patience.

That Petition.--Alvin TURNER rushes into print like a porcupine with his quills projected in all directions, but he leaves his head exposed. We shall follow the advice of the Irishman at Donnybrook Fair, and strike a head wherever we see it. He says that "no petition to have the writer resign his position as councilman" was circulated by himself and CAMPBELL. We supposed that that was the sole object in circulating the petition, for we distinctly stated that if a majority of the citizens in the 4th Ward desired us to resign on account of our advocacy of the hog ordinance we would do so. TURNER is a representative man, and he says such was not the object of the petition. Will he tell us what the petition was circulated for? We withhold our resignation in anxious suspense.
He asks for the proof of his falsehoods, &c. His whole course in this business has been unfair and false. He stated positively that the Council bought a thousand dollar hog pen, after he was informed that it was for other purposes as well. He accused the City Council of tearing down his hand bills, therein making statements that he could not sustain. He acted dishonestly and dishonorably in conjunction with CAMPBELL, in circulating a petition without taking a friend of the ordinance with him, and he acted rascally in not calling upon all the voters in the Ward. If we have not sustained our charges, Alvin TURNER, point out wherein we have failed.
In conclusion : We stated positively that we would not favor the repeal of the law, but that we would resign if a majority in the Ward desired it on account of our advocacy of the law. TURNER, who circulated the petition, says it was not to "have the writer resign his position as Councilman." We are plain speaking and have but common understanding, but we fail to see the reason of circulating that petition, if it was not for the purpose of having us resign. And then, again, why was the petition placed in our hands?
Alvin TURNER, we know you want to be in the Council, but we tell you now you will not fill our place until you tell us why you circulated that petition.

PERSONAL.--Hon. John Ambler SMITH, a gentleman in every sense of the word, is on a visit to the family of Judge NEGUS in our city, with whom he is related. We are much pleased with Mr. SMITH and regret that his stay with us is not longer. Mr. SMITH visits our city not alone, Just before leaving home he took unto himself a "better half" and brings his fair bride him. The Richmond (Va.,) State Journal of June 2d, says of this marriage :
Marriage in High Life.--Hon. John Ambler SMITH, representative in the last Senate of Virginia from the county of New Kent, was married yesterday at the home of the bride, to Miss Nannie, daughter of Hon. John F. LEWIS, one of our United States Senators.
They were attended by Hon. W. H. H. STOWELL, M. C.: State Senators, John E. ROLLER, A. P. LATHROP, and John T. HAMLETT; Judge A. B. COCHRAN, of Augusta; Major Charles Maurice SMITH, of the Whig, and Major Alexander LAWSON, on the part of the groom; and by Misses Maria, Helen, Annie, and Nelly LEWIS, and Miss Alice COWAN on the part of the bride.
The wedding party will spend several weeks in the north, visiting New York, the lakes, Chicago, and Fairfield, Iowa, when the happy couple will return to reside at the home of Dr. E. H. SMITH, in this city, who is the father of the groom.
We have the pleasure of knowing personally the young lady who has just become a blushing bride, and she is indeed a prize to the gentleman who has been so fortunate as to win her. She partakes largely in her manner of the cordial, honest nature of her father, with an amount of beauty and life which readers her a truly charming lady. The Hon. John Ambler SMITH is a leading and prominent member of our party, who amid many of its difficulties, has proven himself a staunch friend of the people. He permits no attachment of a personal character to stand between him and his party, but is always at his post ready for its defence.
The union of two hearts so intensely affectionate to their government, and so loyal, bids us hope that their loyalty to each other may never be darkened by the withering storms of treason. May their young married life be filled with bright prospects for the future, may their bridal tour be a pleasant one, unmarred by any unpleasant accident or event, and may they safely reach their home among us, where a host of friends await their coming, ready to extend a cordial welcome.
