McGAW --In Fairfield, Iowa, on Sunday, July 23d, 1871, at 7 o'clock, A.M., Ollie, son of G. D. and E. A. McGAW, aged 4 years, 2 months and 15 days.
Ollie was a bright and handsome child, pleasant and agreeable to all, with no unkind word for any one. His parents were devotedly attached to him, and his loss is almost unendurable. In their severe affliction they have the condolence of a large circle of sympathizing friends.
    Weep not for those
Who sink within the arms of death,
Ere yet the chilling wintry breath
    Of sorrow o’er them blows,
But weep for them who here remain,
  The mournful heritors of pain,
Condemn’d to see each bright joy fade,
  And mark grief’s melancholy shade
    Flung o’er hope’s fairest rose.

Over the County.--We renewed our trip over the county on last Thursday, but were forced to return on Friday evening, in consequence of the effects of a couple of Red June apples eaten before dinner at the house of our excellent friend, Hon. William HOPKIRK. For once Mr. H. was mistaken; we thought they would hurt us, but he insisted that they would not, and he being an older man, and a bigger man, and we being half-willing, he over-powered us. We are all right now.
We visited the eastern portion of the county passing through the townships of Buchanan, Cedar, Round Prairie, and into the villages of Wooster, Glasgow, Coalport and Salina. We found many old friends and some new ones. Among them we must mention our old friend of a quarter of a century, John COCHRAN, with whom the ills of this world do not over-balance the pleasures. Dr. W. S. WRIGHT, Charles UNKRICH, Post Master TILZEY, Dr. S. W. TAYLOR, Elijah BILLINGSLEY, Henry WEBB, CHAPMAN Bros., Henry LONG, Ira KYLE, and many others, were met; not forgetting our honest old friend Michael RYAN. We stayed all night with Henry UNKRICH, whose wife, as hostess of the Glasgow House, sets before the weary traveler a well ladened and invitable table.
A portion of the country passed over is of a piece with the best in the State. We passed within sight of the large farms of J. C. BRADSHAW, F. T. HUMPHREYS, Edw. CAMPBELL, Jr., Daniel FIDDLER, John SWOPE, J. A. GALLIHER, P. L. G. CAMBLIN and Peter MENATRY. The large and handsome edifice of Mr. FIDDLER can be seen a long distance, while his huge barns denote the industrious and thriving farmer

The number of convicts at present in the penitentiary at Fort Madison, is 272. Of this number, 27 are United States soldiers, sent from the plains by order of courts-martial, for desertion, and three are sent from the Territory of Dakota. Thirteen convicts are in for murder in the first degree, eleven for murder in the third degree, eight for assault with intent to kill, and seven for manslaughter. Of this list thirteen are for life, two for twenty years, and the remainder ranging from two to sixteen years. There is also one young man serving a life term for rape, and one a term of twenty years for the same offense.

The remarks made by us last week in regard to crops in the western part of the county will apply with equal force to those in the eastern portion. We believe, however, that the crop of apples will be even larger than in the western townships. We can attribute this to the more broken character of the country, and the greater amount of timber land, and consequent protection from the heavy winds. The orchards are more numerous and the trees larger, which may be another reason for the conclusion reached that the apple crop was larger.
Timothy seed will be a heavy item of wealth in Jefferson county this season. The hay and seed are both good, and the price of seed has induced our farmer friends to cut a large amount for seed,-- The quantity harvested in this county will be much greater than ever before. We scarcely passed a farm of 40 acres where we did not see timothy in shock, and some of the farmers whose lands we passed by have cut 100 to 125 acres. Most of those with whom we conversed put the yield per acre at four bushels; a few claimed five bushels.
Universally, we think our farmers were in good spirits. They have made up their minds that prices would rule low, but were confident that the extra yield of all grains, seeds and fruits would compensate for it. Some of those who are in debt for articles bought at high prices will feel it an additional burden to pay for the articles used with produce at much reduced rates. But the great majority will swim with the tide. They have kept their heads above until this time, and are sanguine that they can get to shore. Many have resolved to go in debt no more.
