Fairfield, Iowa "WEEKLY LEDGER"
Jefferson County

Transcribed by Joey Stark

Mr. Alex. FULTON's (of Fairfield) Aldernay cow took the first premium at the State Fair. She is six years old, and according to her owner's sworn statement, has made 16½ pounds of butter in seven days, and 23¼ pounds in ten days, from which, we should say, she is a mighty good cow to have in the family.--State Register.

Another Fire--The Fairfield Brewery Consumed.--The cry of fire on Tuesday morning about 3 o'clock, brought the people from their beds to witness the destruction of Mr. George WEITZELL's Brewery, located just south of town. Not a bucketfull of water was thrown on the flames. So rapidly did the flames spread that no one could get access to the wells, and in a short time the building was one sheet of fire.-- Nothing was saved except a few casks and kegs, that were of little account. The loss will fall severely upon Mr. WEITZELL, he having lost his dwelling house by fire only a few months ago. There is an insurance of $4,000 on the Brewery building, which whill not cover the loss by two or three thousand dollars.

County Fair.--Tuesday, the first day of the Fair opened brightly, and yesterday was even better. The articles for exhibition were coming in on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. On Tuesday evening Amos L. WILLIAMS had a fine stock of poultry--11 different breeds--on show. W. G .WILSON has a well arranged eating house, and will supply a square meal, and all kinds of candies, fruits, oysters, &c. The stalls were being rapidly filled up yesterday morning, and the tables were receiving a fine share of attention. Next week we shall give an extended report, and shall try and give the award of premiums.
