      Batavia, Iowa, June 6, 1869.
Dear Ledger :
No doubt your readers think Batavia, with its former boasted zeal, has been wrecked amid the breakers, as there has not been even a "wee line" from here for several months ; if so, let them be at once undeceived, for Batavia is advancing rapidly. Our people are energetic and progressive, but not generally literary, this accounts for our long silence. Batavia has probably never been so prosperous as it has been recently. No less than eight new buildings have been erected in the last few weeks, some of them rivaling your Fairfield dwellings. Merchants, Mechanics and Professional men are doing a satisfactory business, all receiving a liberal patronage.
  R. B MOORE & Co., H. CHASE, Casper DURR and H. S. HALL are engaged in the dry-goods traffic. GRUELL & Co. conduct the principal portion of the grocery trade. R. ROBERTS still owns the Batavia flouring mills, and is giving universal satisfaction.-- McDILL & Bro., and G. W. LEESON, are engaged in the grain and lumber trade. J. A. O’NEAL is representing the hardware and stove trade. He has also a tin-shop attached. W. J. McCULLOUGH & Co., and C. W. CHASE own the two drug stores of Batavia. McCULLOUGH & Co. have their store in the room recently occupied by Dr. HURST. They have painted the room inside and fitted up things generally, also recently replenished their stock. In short everything looks as "neat as new pins," and presents an inviting appearance. They are pleasant gentlemen, and are prepared to sell as cheap as the cheapest. They will not sell whiskey to any one unless for medicinal or mechanical purposes, and under no circumstances to a person who is in the habit of drinking to excess. By strict adherence to principle they merit, and will receive a liberal patronage.
We are pretty well supplied with most of the branches of business. We have two furniture stores, three blacksmith shops, and two harness shops.
Miss Carrie WHEELER is owner of the only Millinery store here, and is giving satisfaction.
Three religious denominations are represented, viz: Methodist, O. S. Presbyterian and Baptist, each having a good house and zealous congregation.
We have three M. D.’s, viz: BALDRIDGE, TAYLOR and NEWSOME. M. B. SPARKS is still "going in" a la mode of attorneys.
We hope that your readers will come out and see our town on the 3d of July. We expect to have a splendid time, an oration will be delivered by an able speaker, responses to toasts, and Fete champetre.
        More anon,       TIMOTHY.
