Public Spirit.--Our old friend, J. J. HODGEN who lives midway between Brighton and Pleasant Plain, has a splendid farm, is a first-class citizen, and an ardent railroad man. He says if a Depot is located on his farm he will feel very much disposed to give $20,000 to the railroad company. In case this should be done Brighton and Pleasant Plain would soon be merged in Hodgenville. Mr. H. would make money by the operation. The two points mentioned had better watch sharp and increase their subscription.

Narrow Escape from Drowning.--Miss Mollie C. AXLINE had a narrow escape from drowning on Saturday last. She is teaching at the Elm Grove School, and her brother went to bring her home in a buggy. On reaching a small stream of water near that place, he found he could proceed no further with the buggy, and tying the horse, crossed on a log. On returning, the lady fell off the log into the water, and was carried a considerable distance down the rushing stream, but was finally rescued by her brother, and in a short time was able to come home, feeling but little the worse of her "ducking."
