Poll Tax List

1849-1850

After a diligent search through a large box full of old papers stored in the second story of the Court House, the tax lists of 1849 and 1850 were obtained, and are now to be seen by the curious in the County Treasurer's Office. A careful hunt was made for the list of 1847, but without success, which is very much to be regretted.

The total amount of taxable property was $94,366, and there were 176 persons liable to pay poll tax. There were 8 silver watches, and $4842 in coin and bank notes. There were 301 horses over 2 years old, 688 head of cattle over 2 years old, and just two mules. There were 794 sheep and 1763 swine. Four carriages sufficed for the population, and there were no pianos in the county.
