BURBACH, POORBAUGH posted by Paul A. Studly on Sunday, July 4, 1999
POORBAUGH, Henry K. b 3 Oct 1848 Berlin PA; d 31 Dec 1937; burial Farrar Methodist Church Cem., Farrar, Polk Co., IA -- Descendents are in direct line to Rev. War Patriot, Philip BURBACH certified by the D.A.R. Any information on any descendents? Obtained his farm, which was located near Mingo, Jasper Co., IA, sometime in the late 1860s from the government (1), before he married. His farm was 10 - 15 miles from his Uncle Henry's 3.8 who had been in Iowa by 1851 (2). After proving up his claim Henry K. evidently returned to Berlin, Pa. married and had two children. In June 1877 he was visiting his Uncle Henry and told by his Pa "not to hurry home as everything was going well" (3). He possibly was there to see about his farm and getting it ready to move his family there which he did in 1878 (4). When he retired his son Arthur owned and operated the farm until his death and it is now [ca 1969] owned by his widow who has since remarried his sister's widower. So the farm has been owned by a Poorbaugh or Poorbaugh related person for about 100 years or more. In Iowa Henry K. became a Methodist as there was probably no German Reformed Church. He was a faithful member and for about 30 years was Sunday School Sup't. at the Farrer Methodist Church. Many of the family members are buried in the church cemetery. (5). Looking for information on John Edward MAHER and Alta WATERMAN. I requested the birth certificate for my grandfather Kermit Paul MAHER, who was born on November 24, 1906 in Clay County, Peterson Township. The parents were listed as Alta WATERMAN and J.E. MAHER. The place of residence, birth place, and date of birth for both J. E. MAHER and Alta WATERMAN were not listed on the certificate. There was also a notation on the certificate that stated that the name was changed from no name to Kermit Paul on 2/25/1974. Date of death for Kermit Maher was October 1980 in Windom, Minnesota.

BOWKER posted by Joe Stapf on Friday, September 10, 1999
BOWKER, Joseph. Looking for information concerning a Joseph BOWKER, whom I believe lived in Newton in the late 1850s, and for certain in the 1870s and 1880s. I have confirmed his presence there in the 1870 and 1880 census. I believe he may have died in 1899, and am guessing he is buried in Newton. He was a veteran of the Civil War. I have recently learned of a Joseph Bowker who filed for a veteran's pension in Iowa. This individual served in Company F, 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This may fit because the wife of my Joseph Bowker appears to be "Dimmis" Bowker(a strange name, but that's what the handwritten entry on the 1870 and 1880 census forms appears to be) who was born in Ohio. I believe also that four of his six children are also buried there in Newton. These children all died very young. Can anyone tell me what cemeteries were in existence in the 1870s/80s/90s, and perhaps who I might contact for more information on those cemeteries?

Our early church records show that baptisms took place in Coalbanks, South Skunk and North Skunk. I believe these were located some where in Jasper County. Does anyone know where these settlements were actually located?
