BOWKER, SMITH posted by Joe Stapf on Thursday, December 17, 1998
I am looking for any information regarding a Joseph BOWKER, who lived in Newton, Iowa, from about 1856 until the spring of 1858, during which time he was living with his mother and stepfather, James and Mary Ann SMITH. He was back in Newton by 1874. He served three years in the Union Army during the Civil War, but I am not sure if it was an Iowa Unit. I have three letters from 1858, and one from 1874, that were written to a cousin in England. These letters were brought to the USA when the son of that cousin came to America in 1909. In Joseph BOWKER's letter dated January 7, 1858 he writes of being part of a group that "carries on a Literary Paper, which is read before the Library Assocaition, once in two weeks." He mentions also being a member of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, and having been through all the degrees of Odd Fellowship, also. In his 1874 letter Joseph BOWKER mentions that his mother and stepfather are still alive, that he (Joseph) has a business as a sign painter, is married and has a daughter Mary Augusta BOWKER, who is 8 years old. Any help would be much appreciated.
