Fairmount

This is the name of a station on the Keokuk & Des Moines Railroad, situated about midway between Monroe and Prairie City, and situated in the western part of Fairview township. The town is beautifully situated on the level plateau of prairie separating the Des Moines and Skunk Rivers, and the timber skirting either stream can be distinctly seen from the town.

Quite a shipping business is done from this station, and in 1878, potatoes form a considerable export.

There are fifteen or twenty dwellings in Fairmount, and four or five business houses, all of which are doing a very satisfactory business.

The Methodist Episcopal society of Fairmount has just completed a house of worship. It is of frame, has a steeple, and is of very neat proportions. Its cost was $1,919. The building was dedicated about September 20th, by Rev. Mr. Cullen. The society may well feel proud of this handsome structure.
