Farmer; P. O. Colfax; born in Pennsylvania in 1802; came to Washington, N.Y. in 1812; thence to Ohio in 1835; thence to Indiana in 1839. Owns his residence in Colfax. Married Miss Ann ROWE in 1825; she was born in Madison Co., N.Y. in 1805. They have seven children - Elizabeth, Mary, Mariah, William, Ann, Eliza, Rebecca, Syble and James Z. Are members of the M. E. Church. Mr. Barker is a retired farmer. He came to Powesheik Tp., this county, when it was entirely new, there being but five settlers in the township.

City Hotel, corner of Front & Walnut streets; Colfax; born in Vermont in 1829; came to Jasper Co. in 1867. Married Chester H. STONE in 1857; he was born in Vermont in 1820, and died August 1874. Then married Wm. M. CROFT; born in Ohio in 1838. Mr. Stone was among the early settlers of Jasper CO.; he built all the bridges on the R. I. R. R. from Kellogg to Des Moines, and all the county bridges of any importance. Mrs. Croft owns the Pacific as well as the City Hotel; also a house and lot at Newton. All the first religious services held at Colfax were held in her dining room.

CROSS, Ammi W.
Butcher and Dealer in Live Stock; market on Walnut Street; Colfax; born in Maine Sept. 9, 1817. Came to Ohio in 1840; thence to Jasper Co. in 1855. He owns his residence, a house and lot on Walnut, his shop and forty acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. He married Miss Martha DREW in 1840; she was born in the State of Maine Jan. 22, 1816. They have five children - Rosilla, John M., Joseph D., Nancy and Freeman. Held office of Justice of the Peace, Trustee of Powesheik Tp., School Director for several years. Mr. Cross is one of the early settlers; broke ground on his farm of ninety acres himself; sold out in 1877; opened his present business in fall of 1877.

Farmer, Breeder, and Shipper of Poland-China Hogs; Sec. 22; P. O. Prairie City; born in England in 1842; emigrated to America in1847, and to Jasper Co. in 1868; has 160 acres of land, valued at $45 per acre. Married Ann BREMIN in 1865; she was born in England in 1839. They have four children - Clifton C., Clara M., Luctun and Stella. Republican. Held the Office of Secretary of School Board five years, and Justice of the Peace six years. Enlisted in 47th Illinois V. I. in 1865; took part in battles at Vicksburg, Corinth, Island No. 10 and skirmishes of lesser note; mustered out in 1864, at Washington, D. C.

Dec. 21, 1855, leaving three children - Amanda, who died March 24, 1857; Elizabeth and Matilda. Mrs. Ellett is among the early settlers; came to Iowa a widow with three children, and has as fine a farm and as good buildings as any in the township.

Drafted, in 1864, into the 10th Iowa Infantry; skirmishing, etc.; mustered out in Washington, D. C. in 1865. Mr. Hasness has been one of the heaviest stock dealers of the county, as well as a heavy grain dealer, until within three or four years; is dealing in horses at the present time.

HAYES, Daniel B.
Farmer and Stock Grower; Sec. 27; P. O. Prairie City; born in Henry Co., Ind., April 1, 1842; came to Jasper Co. in 1846; has 240 acres of land, valued at $65 per acre. Married Elizabeth PORTER in 1866; she was born in Indiana in 1842, and died in 1868. He then married Mary HENSLEY in 1871; she was born in Iowa in 1852; they have three children - Grace, Mercy and Peace. He is a Greenback Democrat. Has held the offices of School Director, Road Supervisor, and Justice of the Peace; held the office two terms, and resigned. Are members of the Christian Church. Was Master of Grange one year. Has just completed a house which is acknowledged to be the finest in this county; from the upper rooms of which one can see for twenty miles or more in any direction; as beautiful grove and as pleasant a place, generally, as the county affords.

DUPRAY in 1874. She was born in Jackson Co., Iowa in 1852; they have one child - Raymond L. Republican in politics. Held the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction at former place of residence. Members of the M. E. Church. Cav. in 1861; participated in the battles of Wilderness, was all through the battle of Gettysburg, and all the principal battles of the Eastern army; was mustered out at Philadelphia in September 1864.

Democratic; he is a member of the Episcopal Church; she is a member of the Congregational Church. He is a member of Masonic Lodge, Temple Commandery at Des Moines, a Knights Templar; also fraternity of Knights of Pythias.

She is a member of the Congregational Church. He is a member of the A., F. & A. M. Lodge, No. 313, Mitchellville. Enlisted in the 8th Ohio V. I., first call 1861, three months; mustered out July 1861; re-enlisted in 42d Ohio V. I. Sept. 1861; participated at Mill Creek, Cumberland Gap, Pound Gap Bayou, Port Gibson; run blockade on river at several points at and below Vicksburg; mustered out at Columbus, Ohio Oct. 1864; re-enlisted as private; promoted to Sergeant, then to Second Lieutenant, and to First Lieutenant, and had command of company for some time. Mr. Miller came to Iowa at quite an early date from Ohio in a wagon, having about $2,500. Has been here about ten years, and is worth at present $25,000; has made what he has himself, working for his father until 25 years of age; was engaged in the mercantile business, and Postmaster before coming here.

Mr. M.'s father was one of the early pioneers of Wisconsin; went to Dubuque when there were but a few board shanties there; was driven back to the Wisconsin side by the Indians; his business was mining and smelting; went to California in 1849; died in 1851, at Panama, on his return home; was in the Blackhawk war. Mr. M. came to Jasper Co. in 1867. Has 245 acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. He married Miss Mary ALEXANDER in 1848; she was born in Scotland in 1825. They have six children - Charles, Eddy, Albert, Lucy, Marion and Delos. Republican. Has held office of Sub- Director, Township Supervisor and was Representative from Jackson County in the General Assembly held at Des Moines in 1858. Member of the Presbyterian Church. Enlisted in the 16th Regiment Iowa V. I. in 1862; participated in the battle of Shiloh; mustered out in 1863 on account of ill health. Mr. M. commenced on his farm in an entirely new and unimproved state; now has a house costing $2,500, and has built fence and outbuildings to correspond; has a grove of 1,200 soft maples, put out in the sod in 1867; they now stand forty feet high; has 200 fine bearing apple trees, with numerous smaller fruits. At the time of Mr. M.'s coming to Jasper County, but few bridges were in existence; he has taken a lively interest in the completion of the many substantial bridges now spanning the streams in his vicinity.

SPILLER in 1855; she was born in Canada in 1832; died in 1856; then married Miss Sarah N. COE in 1864; she was born in Thompson, Ct. in 1843; died in April 1875, leaving three children - Edith J. (died in September 1876), Hattie E., Willie E.; then married Mary DECORE in 1877; she was born in Ohio in 1844. Democratic in politics. Member of the G. A. R., and Patron of Husbandry. Joined the navy in 1846 in Boston, Mass.; assisted in taking the towns of Alvarado, Vera Cruz; helped to land the troops under Gen. Scott; came home to Brooklyn in the United States store ship Supply, and by his own request was selected as one of the crew on an exploring expedition under the command of Linch; discharged from the United States navy in December 1848. Enlisted in the 13th Mass. Vol. Inf. in May 1861; participated in the taking of Bolivar Heights; and was promoted to First Lieutenant there for services in the field; had charge as Second Sergeant of 2d Platoon of Co. C, 13th Mass., and the command of which he had charge captured the first gun captured from the rebels by the Army of the Potomac, and was discharged for disability in July 1862, and enlisted as private in Co. A, 51st Mass. Inf. in Oct. 1862; was promoted to First Lieutenant Nov. 1, 1862; served in North Carolina; participated at Whitehall, Kingston, Goldsboro, and others; was mustered out from that regiment in August 1863; then received a commission as recruiting officer from the War Department to recruit for the 57th Mass. Vol. Inf.; mustered in as Captain Jan. 4, 1864; participated in the battles of Wilderness, North and South Anna and Spottsylvania Court House; wounded, and went in hospital; did service at Washington as Assistant Provost Marshal; mustered out Nov. 10, 1864, but served until Jan. 12, 1865.

Mr. S. is an old-line Ahig; is now a Republican; hass held the office of Justice of the Peace, Township Assessor, Township Trustee, and School Director of Prairie City schools. Mr. Scott is among the early settlers, coming upon his farm when entirely new. Had five sons in the late war, non of whom came home alive, three going from home and two left families.
